well my old PC mobo fried, taking the processor and vid card with it. so i decided on getting new parts, and using some of the old ones:

256ddr 333 (a new stick on top of the old 256 stick i already have) athlon 3ghz, asus a8v, asus geforce 6600, 128mb ddr. using old HDs, and old case w. 300watt PS. the new stuff costs a whopping 500 bucks total (CAD). can this run on 300 watts? or would i need to upgrade? any better parts for the price out there ? thnx.

so new specs would be:

3ghz athlon xp
512 ddr 333
asus a8v
geforce 6600 128mb ddr,
300wat PS
80 gb HD

nice

though i find having a gig of ram is a big improvement over 512

one of these days wehn i ahve the money i'm gonna throw 2 gigs in my piece

300W is fine. ive built similar systems with 300W psus, with even more power sucking devices (4 hard disks, 2 optical drives, bunch of hard drive coolers/extra fans etc etc) without a hitch

What are you looking to spend? If you have the cash, I'd go with a pci express mobo so you can buy a pic express video card such as the ATI X800XT. I'd also get a gig of ram like was suggested as 512mb just doesn't cut it when it comes to games today or in the near future. Sure, you can run the games with only 512mb but it'll run MUCH better with 1gb.

If you're trying to save some cash which iswhat you may be looking for due to the 512mb ram, 128mb video card, and only 80gb HDD, I really suggest getting a little lower speed CPU so you can get higher ram or better video card.

deliquent, its a budget PC. how does the AMD sempron perform? is it equivalent in terms of performance to the old athlons (the non 64s)? as for the mobo i dont know the exact specs, but I do know its the cheapo 75 dollar CAD one, so I hope that answers ur question.
