Tea Helps Prevent Body Fat Accumulation.
by Paul Cribb, B.H.Sci HMS
Drinking tea to prevent obesity may be more than just an old wives’ tale.
Oolong, green and standard black tea have been used for centuries to help prevent obesity and now there is evidence that these teas prevent fat production, lower blood cholesterol and help detoxify the liver.
Japanese researchers recently isolated a chemical in each one of these teas called teasaponin (a mixture of theasaponins E1 and E2). This compound appeared to prevent fat accumulation in mice that were fed a high-fat diet for 111 weeks. Results showed that teasaponin inhibited blood fat levels and the effects of pancreatic lipase activity. Pancreatic lipase is the most important enzyme for the digestion of dietary fat. It is well known that dietary fat is not directly absorbed from the intestine unless it has been subjected to the action of pancreatic lipase.
Teasaponin also suppressed an increase in fat around the stomach and the mice fed teasaponin had smaller fat cells. Furthermore, teasaponin appeared not to cause diarrhea or flatulence—the nasty side effects of other fat absorbers like chitosan and Xenical. So it definitely wouldn’t hurt to drink a few cups of tea each day, particularly after meals.
