Tanita scales

Why do i feel like this thing is way off? I got a caliper test and was 14 this thing says i'm 22%!!! wtf?

That's because there's no way they could work. My best guess is that they work off of a mathematical formula that takes into account your age, height, and weight. This formula probably comes from a chart that was developed to ballpark b.f. on normal couch potatoes. Ronnie Coleman in contest shape would probably register 33% on one of those. They're a joke.

Wrong, biolectrical impedance. If you read the manual (which nobody ever does) you'd find out they're most accurate between 4-6PM, heavily dependant on hydration level and not recommended for bodybuilders.

My tanita consistantly shows me 4-5% fatter than calipers, but at least it's very consistant. It's faster and easier than calipers, and all I have to do is subtract that 4-5%. Plus it measures actual weight to within .5 lbs.

Your right DT i did not read the manual. I weigh myself in the morning right out of bed. i just noticed now that i went from my 22% in the morning to 17%. Lets see what 5p.m. looks like. I still think that this is not accurate but at least it gives me a number to gauge my performance.

You've also got to set the gauge for your height.

Wrong! They're a scam. Bill Phillips told me that HMB would build muscle at an alarming rate, and that one didn't pan out. I put Tanita scales in the same category. You are right, they aren't recommended for bodybuilders/or African Americans like yourself. Therefore, they are worthless to most of the people that frequent this site. Your back's looking pretty thick btw...

my parents have one at their place, they seem to like it

i had a 4% shift after eating a chicken breast and taking a piss so you can guess what i think of them :D

They're not suitable for anyone of above average muscularity. Even the athlete mode is designed for endurance athletes, not weightlifters.

I have found with mine that I must set it as athlete even though I don't do the required level of cardio they mention. I set the height also. From there it is usually 3% above ( I stop on it a 6pm after urinating) the average I get with calipers when done professionally. I use it as a measuring stick. I still get my BF tested once a month. My model is old but it gives me a good snap shot as to where I am!

dial tone hit the nail on the head .i have one of these scales and have found huge fluctuations between readings and i know its inacurate because it says like 19% and i have a six pack so iam sure its off iam going to get myself a caliper and start taking measurements never measure bf yet iam guessing 10-12%
