T3 and Reverse T3

Gel

New member
I read somnewhere that if you have less than 40g of carbs a day the T3 in your body can turn into reverse T3 and slow the metabolism down. I've only read this in one place though but as I am on T3 and a Ketogenic diet (less than 20g carbs) I'm a bit concerned!

I don't know why this is in the chemistry forum, but anway...

It's not quite "Reverse T3," but when you carb deplete you also decrease t4 to t3 conversion in the liver, which then leads to decreased metabolism. You still lose fat on keto diets though because they work through other mechanisms, mainly lowered plasma insulin levels and inefficiency in using ketones for fuel. The lowered t4 to t3 conversion can be remedied with taurine and a little fructose in the diet.

I have never been a fan of low-carb diets.. Well, I take that back... Some time ago when I was a young buck and knew nothing about AAS or diets (this wasn't that long ago.. I've come a long way in a few years), I attempted (without long-term success) A CKD a la Dan Duchaine. To make a long story short, I found it BETTER to utilize a more sensible low cal diet consisting of 40% protein, 40% carbs, 20% fat. I was able to stay on this diet for longer, lose more fat, and NOT have my workouts go to shit.

There IS biochemical merit to the keto diet, meaning, you actually DO lose (a LITTLE) more fat in the beginning, but it really sucks for BBers and is more than compensated for by reduced T3 and workout intensity.

I'm utterly against the notion that 'one must "reduce carbs" to lose weight.. 'That is absolutely incorrect.... To lose fat, one must reduce calories.
