'Supplements' and 'Drugs'

Being straightforward...

I'm woried that the line between 'supplements' and 'drugs' is thinning so much it may become a very big problem. Where is the distinction? Im sure this question will be asked by 'authorities', so trying to encourage some sort of prepared thought for it (no Im not paid by any company to write this, I just enjoy the supplements I use).

In some posts I've seen written (inc my own), the response is not far off of that from an 'addict' who wants a fix. At the moment, I think we are (still) in a kind of honey-moon period with the supplement industry but this needs some thinking!...

its a thin line in some instances, IMO I would define supplementation as overall health enhancements (some may be hard on parts of the body but the health reward > risk), and drugs are substances used morally used to fix a medical condition, or immorally used for abuse. of course with this defintion some supplements could be drugs and some drugs could be supplements. I dont think you can concretely seperate each

I actually think that the differentiation between supplements & drugs is clearer/simpler than that. Supplements are meant to 'supplement' or add to something that's already there & a drug basically introduces a 'new' substance into the body.

that sounds better than mine, but some vitamins cannot be made by our bodies, so are they drugs then?

I'm pretty sure that if the substances aren't produced naturally in your body they can be obtained naturally thru diet (i.e., are a natural substance)

nandrolone is produced by humans in trace amounts, in certain cases, by god knows what pathway.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today warned several manufacturers and distributors of unapproved drugs containing steroids that continued distribution and sale of these products without FDA approval could result in regulatory action including seizure and injunction. FDA is concerned that the use of these products, which are marketed as dietary supplements and promoted for building muscle and increasing strength.

“FDA takes its responsibility to protect Americans from dangerous unapproved drugs seriously. Today’s action is indicative of our resolve,” said Margaret O’K. Glavin, FDA’s Associate Commissioner for Regulatory Affairs.

These warning letters are part of FDA’s continued efforts to protect consumers from dangerous steroid products. In March 2004, FDA sent warning letters to 23 manufacturers and distributors of products containing androstenedione. We do not know if we have been sent a letter yet, but we do know that Primal Mass is now up on the chopping block.'
