The demograpics are perfect for much violence: a lot of very very poor people, which usually means low education levels.

Do you think the media is under reporting the violence because the overwhelming majority of people involved are black, and media do not want to be seen as "racist"?

Very much so.

Also, the body count is being repressed too.

I guarantee you the authorities know or at least have a general idea of how many are dead. It's of epic proportions by US standards.

Thousands and thousands are dead and more dying every hour.

I imagine 9/11 pales in comparison to this disaster, in terms of damage for sure...human life, can't say for certain.

How many people died on 9/11?

Does it make ANY sense to fire shots at a rescue helicopter?? How the hell can it rescue you if you shoot the friggin' thing down?!?!?!

People suck.

I was in NY the day before this hit. I used to live in NO, and I was telling my family that this will cause more death than 9/11. I just knew the demographics and geography.

They looked at me like I was crazy. I wish I was wrong, but it will have killed more people than 9/11 when the count is known.

Agree with you on the media; I also believe that the constant reporting showing African American looters and violence will keep donations down.

Hard to compare - they death toll in 9/11 was ~4,000 or so. Because of the high value of what we destroyed, and the part of the US it happened to, 9/11 may actually cost more money.

But this is unbelievable.

People remember Camille and they lived through it and thought it couldn't be any worse than that storm. Complacency has played a large roll in this disaster.

I fear upwards of 30,000+ have perished in this storm and I hope I am way off but there are still areas of the gulf coast that haven't been reached yet.

I saw pictures of entire towns (small albeit) completely gone. Total and complete devastation.

I agree about the looter and violence thing. Who wants to send money to a bunch of thugs scenario will be seen.

It's tragic, sad, angry, frustrated, etc all rolled up into one ball.

Camille was actually a much more powerful storm; I think it was the second most powerful EVER, after Gilbert, which killed like 13,000 people in Nicaragua way back.

Imagine more people dying in the states from a storm than in Nicaragua?! (I don't think the numbers will be that high. Maybe I am blind).

It will be possibly months before we ever know how many.

A lot of people are unaccounted for including an entire police department in one town on the gulf coast.

thats just horrible...i couldnt imagine something so disgusting and inhumane....animals i tell ya...everyday people prove to be animals....not everyone..there are some genuinely good people out there...

i believe the cost of katrina wl far outweight 9/11 in the long run due to many factors. the first and foremost reason is the shipping industry. three of the top ten shipping ports for the united states are in louisiana. one is impassable right now, and one is completly destroyed. this alone in the first six months is going to cost the shipping industry, retailers, and local state and federal government, billions and bilions of dollars. with these ports closed the imports must be diverted to other ports, say newyork. with new york taking in twenty times more than is usual, how easy would it be for something to be smuggled into the us, namely a nuke, or some device of that nature. for this reason there will be more personnel hired to search, which will delay ships which actually means less for us, but at higher costs. the relocation of hundreds of thousands of people, although may sound impossible, is possible but comes with a heavy pricetag. although i would never think of attempting to downplay 9/11 in anyway shape or form, i do believe that katrina will dwarf the monetary cost of 9/11.
