Sunscreen blamed for Skin Cancer

Sun worshippers may be increasing their risk of developing skin cancer by using sunscreens that encourage them to stay too long in the glare, researchers say.

Sunburn has long been regarded as an important cause of melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, especially in children under 15. But some experts argue that the real risk comes from spending too long in the sun, and that using sun creams to protect against sunburn may instead promote the cancer.

I am so happy that I have never needed sunscreen.

fair enough, its just saying sunscreen will stop you getting burnt, but by spending so long in the sun you are increasing your exposure to UV rays, which the sunscreen may not totally block out

as i remember sunscreens (i've nver really used them other than when im high up like on a hill or mountain or something) arerated to protect against 1 type of UV only?

Hell! In the east, the summer has been so rainy, cloudy, and dark, I can't imagine anyone needing sunscreen -- just lots of insect repellent instead.

This does not surprise me. In many countries where people spend all day outside with no sunscreen people never get skin cancer.

I think the point is that putting on sunscreen gives people a false sense of confidence and they stay out too long. Most people never reapply it, and it doesnt always protect for very long due to sweat, water movement etc...a light sweatproof sunscreen and limited exposure is the way to go.

The reason for this is that they have already established a high level of melanin on your skin.

You are at highest risk to get skin cancer when you are producing new melanin (melanocytes).
These react easily to the UV rays and will mutate into ugly things.

If you are already older and have the melanin already created, then you are unlikely to need much more, so you don't create more via the melanocytes, and you are less likely to get skin cancer.

Overall, I don't really care if I need sunscreen or not in terms of skin cancer - I just know that I will burst into flames without it.

Ya, really.

They have done studies that connect everything to cancer.

anything that increases cell turnover.

if I vigorously rubbed my arm as hard as I could - I would technically be increasing my chances of getting skin cancer there.

Your cells die off and new ones show up all the time - out of all those times, you have some chance of cancer.
If you increase the turnover so that there are way more cells being turned over, then you are also increasing the chances that one will mutate when it is created, and then you have a shot at cancer.

they think that it is a combination of having a predisposition to it, and then being exposed to the risk factors.

that of course being different for different cancers.
supposedly all males, if they live long enough, will get prostate cancer.
just we usually die off prior to having to worry about it.
