Steroid Argument

Got into an argument on a board with a guy telling me how horrible steroids and hgh are and his reply was this

I don't have time to get into the ethics and risks of performance-enhancing drug use, but GH is not an androgenic steroid. It isn't a steroid hormone at all. The effects are completely metabolically different than that of the androgens (which are not nice drugs at all to be taking long term, even at much lower levels than athletes take), and while the side effect profile is less messy, supraphysiologic doses of HGH have been shown to increase diabetes, hypertension, and sudden cardiac death due to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. These are not safe, inert drugs in general, they have far-reaching and detrimental consequences, and a lot of the information being given in this thread is blatantly wrong. The fact that other drugs are abused does not make the abuse of these drugs any less dangerous.

Is there a question here? I agree with his comments about GH in terms of it not being an androgen. As for his gripes about AAS, there is some truth but everyone has a different opinion on whats "safe" and whats "abuse".

I do find it kind of funny that people stand on their soapbox however and claim ling term use is the devil, yet our whol lives our bodies are pumping testosterone into our blood stream.

Sure there are some ethical questions about sports and AAS use but that is an argument like religion and politics and one that cant be won because its all purely based on personal opinion. At the end of the day if they want to keep enhancement drugs out of sports then the governing bodies need to step up and make rules that HURT AND inforce them. If steroids in professional sports is such a big deal to the governing bodies then make a rule if a ball player is caught juicing ban them for life, simple as that.

to an extent, he does have a point.

you have to look at the issue as subjective. everyone is going to have a differing view on it.
HOWEVER, as with anything, there are always two extremes. the one extreme will be the people who says AAS is the devil and kills everyone it touches, yadda yadda yadda, and there's also the extremists who think that ALL negative steroid information is wrong, completely bogus, make-believe crap, and think there's nothing wrong with pinning all sorts of oils 365 days a year.
of course in these cases, both sides are incorrect.

there are dangers to steroid use, and there are advantages to it as well. buddy who you argued with is not necessarily right OR wrong with regards to his view on AAS in general.
i think people who believe ALL of the negative hype about steroids are uninformed, and i also think that people who praise steroids and think that everyone is simply retarded for believing ANY of the dangerous facts behind steroid use, are also uninformed.

I think he is an alarmist. Especially in the fact the many over the counter drugs will kill you quicker and damage you quicker than almost any roid even at extreme doses. Example, take to much aspirin, you get hit in the stomach and because your blood is thinner you bleed out internally. Or take to much period and you just die. Ibuprofen can ruin your liver before you can say oops! Cough syrup, nyquil, alcohol, etc The thing is, if you abuse it, then yes you can hurt yourself. In the long run, I'm looking at Arnold and while he looks like crap, he is old now. As for his heart it was a genetic defect. Le Labrada, he is alive and well, Mike Matarozo, Lee Haney, Frank Zane, Franco Columbo, etc. The only one I remember dying was Andreas Muntzer and there was never a conclusion that he died from steroids. I seem to remember that his death was attributed to extreme dehydration and the use of diuretics.

For that matter, sex will kill you, breathing the air, etc. I just don't see a need to be alarmist and one sided in your argument. Show me statistics about the death of those due to steroids/gh use. vs those who don't or those who don't "abuse" them. Define abuse?

I am by no means saying there is no risk involved, but its kinda like saying carry a gun but don't load it or you might get shot with your own gun. Of course its a risk, but no one would dare carry an empty weapon for protection.
