I don't think I've seen any post about this so I thought I'd create a disscussion.
International reaction to Bush's State of the Union address has been surprisingly interesting. With terrorism being an issue that threatens the peace and harmony of all nations, I expected Bush's speech to be well received. Despite the herald opinions from the American press, the foreign press has shredded and picked apart Bush's speech with vigor and ferocity. Descending opinions from foreign media can be found in many allied countries such as the United Kingdom and Australia.
Bush's speech seemed to be very general and simplistic. Many of his arguments seemed to be unsupported rhetoric. Bush's targeting of Iraq, Iran and North Korea seemed to be more of a bullying tactic designed to legitimize his futile missile defense program and to promote his increase in military spending.
Our nations concern of Iraq, Iran and North Korea is old news. Bush is only perpetuating Americans into paranoia. I'm not denying the importance of protecting our nations people and interests. I'm concerned that our priorities are not being properly articulated and concentrating on nations such as Iran, Iran and North Korea slightly narrow goals.
After the Gulf War, Iraq's ability to build and deploy biological and nuclear weapons was decimated. Iraq lacks the infrastructure to support a missile program. Iraq does not have delivery systems to deploy such weapons either.
North Korea and Iran shouldn't even been mentioned in the same breath with the country above. North Korea's government is amateur and is in peril under an irresponsible dictatorship. North Korea has few contacts or connections to international terrorism.
We must becareful not to alienate possible allies in our fight to prevent further terrorist activity. Our arrogance will only blind our judgment and perspective.
Just my cheap 2 cents.
