starving at night...........

I get home at work and eat, usually baked fish and some veggies and head to gym and after work out I have a protein shake but about 9-9:30 I'm so hungry. Anyone else have this problem? I always thought it was bad to eat 2 hours before going to bed.
Or should I better benefit by shake before gym and eat after workout...which would be about 8:00

can you list out food intake from the entire day?

you eating enough in the am and afternoon? enough fat? not much processing? hows water intake?

To deal with emotional and boredom hunger I eat 6 meals a day instead of 5. It has worked wonders.

Meal 5 is usually 4 oz chicken and 3 cups of steamed broccoli and 1 T. of flax oil or 1 T. peanut butter

then whenever I'm feeling bored or just hungry I allow myself about 100 cals at the end of the day ; like 4 egg whites ; a protein shake; even diet yogurt.

It's really helped ; especially saving the fat with that protein veggie meal helps to feel full.

usually in am I eat oatmeal or slim fast shake
mid morning usually yogert
lunch varies from chicken, fish, veggies, subway
then midday some tuna and another yogert
after work I eat about the same as lunch..well, never subway and after workout protein shake.
I can't seem to fit much more in there. I am satisfied all day but come 9-9:30 Its all i can do to not raid the pantries...If I can't stand it I'll have a can of low sodium soup or something small like that.

I just feel like what is making me that hungry is the workout....and then shake. I am always horrified to eat after that....I still have lots of the old school way of thinking and have come a long way though since I have been here.

I could never and eat like most of you do because I hate the brown rice and will sometimes eat my bake chicken on whole wheat bun or have a lean ground meat burger on whole wheat but it is a far cry from the fast food I was eating everyday!!!

That "don't eat before bed" thing came into play cuz MANY people eat chips, cookies, ice cream before bed.......

If your calories for the day are reasonable there is NO REASON to not eat something right before bed....a Protein + a fat (some nuts + cottage cheese or nuts + a shake) is actually beneficial to your body - helps prevent catabolism. A Casein shake as opposed to just whey could be used here also.

Those Slim Fast shakes are junk - dont' buy any more of them......also your fat intake looks low during the day.....add some nuts to your midmorning snack and to your pre-workout meal....

Throw your meal plan into www.fitday.com so you know what you are eating roughly - find out if it is really enough and what your macronutrients are. That will tell u if you are eat least eating enough cals and enough carbs. Then I'd maybe throw in a small last meal of almonds or fats of some sort to cover you for the rest of the nite. Try it and see.

Your body has no concept of the 24 hour day. Your body adapts to what you give it during the 24 hour day. If you are very active, it will demand more. Regardless of time of day.

That is an outdated arbitrary "rule" so people have some "rule" to tell them to stop shoving their fat faces with crap. The time before bed is a VITAL time to eat something - otherwise, during the all-impostant "rebuilding" part of the day while your body is resting there is no fuel or energy to properly rebuild.

Rather than depending on a random rule about when to stop eating, focus on WHAT to eat. Fuel your body for the upcoming demands. You will be sleeping - so give your body some food that will give it energy, but slow burning energy. No startchy carbs (fast energy, not necessary when sleeping). Think fats and protein.

Pre-bed meals *can* include carbs, but be smart about them. Something like cottage cheese and walnuts/almonds, protein shake (not just whey) and peanut butter, apple and peanut butter, etc.

good to know...I'll try your suggestions!

It just starting happening recently and I am assuming it is because of the work outs and body wanting more for fuel. I just am glad to know that if I do eat something at night it won't wreck my entire day.

oh and jencats.......the slimfast, damn that is disappointing. They are not cheap either. I do have the protein powder at home and was making my own pretty regularly. Just starting buying these because they were the easier. :( Know of any premade protein drinks that are good for someone trying to lose body fat?

I like the EAS shakes - they come in the box drink thingies in packages of 4. But they are very small servings... I would rely on protein powder more - I actually travel w/ a shaker or a good jug thing (not a large plastic cup w/ the straw thing because you can never get the straw part clean) and keep a baggie of protein mix & scoop w/ me. Just add water & you have instant drink for a lot cheaper.

I would probally do better if I did just bring my protein and mix it with the water I drink already. It just isn't as good. But you do consider that a meal replacement?

hmm. i rarely drink protein shakes mixed with water all by themselves as a meal.

If I want it to be a quick meal I either add milk or eat some diet yogurt after the shake.

whey mixed with water would keep me satisfied all of 5 minutes and I'd be hungry again! lol

Those EAS shakes are good but they are expensive

yeah, protein shakes (whey) by themselves aren't a meal replacement IMO.....unless it's pre-bed, then it's just easier than cooking/eating/chewing food......Casein protein sticks with me longer than whey does or you can have whey with a fat, like PB.....or nuts......

And yeah, the slimfast has sugar & junk in them, just read the ingredients.....regular protein is much healthier....and you can add fruit & stuff to it yourself so you know what's in it....

That is what he ment to say Sassy lol......Ksharp..I mix mine with fat free milk in the little blender and it tastes fine...Duck had me eat oats/hotwater and protein powered mixed into a paste and it was good lol....

I hate cottage cheese too - makes me gag. :)

Can try some plain yogurt mixed with berries (NOT the non-fat crap, regular stuff), 1oz cheese and apple, celery and PB, etc etc .....

Protein shake with water is a great post-WO nutrition, but not the best alone befopre bed - too fast digesting. Make a "shake" with 1/4 skim milk, rest water, protein powder, couple berries and peanut butter (or add 1 tbsp plain olive oil for fat, no flavor)

Have you tried flax seed oil before bed?

^^ yuck^^ lol....but it is great in uping your cals when you are to low lol

yes I know its gross... but sure helps with upping cals and helping hold you over during the night. I do the whole, hold the nose close and just pour it in the back of my throat thingy. ewwwwwww

Snacks before bed are not only ALLOWED but a necessity.

All the advice here is great.
- Toss the junk shakes. I think the EAS suggestion is a good one. I personally drink VPX ZeroCarb in chocolate. 2 scoops is 160 cals of straight protein, no carbs, no fat and kills my sweet tooth at night too.
- Daisy's advice on snack ideas is spot-on as well -- My evening snacks are PROTEIN and FAT only. No carby snacks at night... the protein and fat keep you better satieated and they will stay with you as you sleep too so you won't wake up starving.
(The only time I do have carby snacks at night is on my cheat day, when I'll have a drink and/or dessert with and/or after dinner out at a restaurant. Otherwise, it's hands-off!)

Starving is never a good thing. It means you are in a catabolic state. If you want to gain or lose you can't have that! You need those amino's flowing! I would try to eat more meals through out the day. But you may just be one of those people that has more appetite at night. I eat birthday cake before bed sometimes, lol. But I also sweat like crazy in my sleep after that burning it off (my body is very weird. If I eat a lot before bed, it makes my body burn up and I just burn it all off). So I wouldn't suggest anything like that!

I would suggest drinking a whey shake mixed in skim milk and a tablespoon of natural pb. That should hold you over until morning. Another idea would be to pop an rala or two and mix up some fat free yogurt along with a small amount of berrys. If you go with the shake idea, I highly recommend you go find Omega's Amplify02 thread and get some glutamine peptides to throw in that night time shake. They really help hold you over and have many health benefits (regular glutamine is trash that the body can't use).

Good luck and remember, never feel guilty about eating, no matter what time of day it is! Your body needs proper nutrition to grow. Too many women and now men these days are scared to eat at certain times. Trust me, the body needs fuel!!! :)

Another good shake (and it has the aminos & stuff in it already) which tastes AWESOME (if you like chocolate) and you can make it thick like a pudding is Core from Core nutritionals...... :p YUM!

Here's a link to it on DPS: http://www.dpsnutrition.net/get_item_cu001.htm

Seems like a lot of calories, but the svg. is 3 scoops - but 1 scoop isn't too bad....

No shizzle, ME TOO. Though I did have ice cream last night, woke up, and my boyfriend says to me "OMG, you are SKINNY! Look at you!"

Only me... only *I* would wake up looking smaller than ever after a night of ice cream. :D I'll eat salad all day and wake up tomorrow lookin' like a :cow: :FRlol:

And those of you who want to live vicariously... I got ice cream at Marble Slab (like Coldstone Creamery) and I enjoyed a medium sized birthday cake flavored ice cream with cookie dough and white chocolate chip mix-ins... and served to me in a Butterfinger waffle cone bowl. :p

I'm awesome. :dance2:

I've noticed that lately myself after a carb up..... interesting!

I swear, ask my wife, it's crazy. I will need to turn the air on 68 or 69 just to feel slightly cool. If I don't eat a lot of food before bed I will lose muscle rapidly. Sometimes if I am very tired I will mix 4 scoops of whey in skim milk and 7 tablespoons of olive oil and I will still wake up 4 hours later starving. I guess it just cranks my metabolism up. I actually wake up with my everything looking much fuller and round, instead of flat but also very hot at the same time, like I sweated out a fever through the night.

Of course I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. I started out at 140lbs at a little over 6'4. So I *need* to eat like this or it will all start coming off real quick. Last night not long before bed as I ate a can of tuna and then slice after slice of banana bread with milk, I think my wife was giving me the evil eye as she ate her tuna and strawberrys lol.

Now I feel like going for icecream! Birthday cake flavored ice cream with cookie dough and white chocolate chip?! You evil sob! lol :p

You probably did wake up looking smaller if it's something you don't do often. It probably spiked your metabolism from not being used to having that before bed and caused you to burn it off a little. Judging from your avi, I don't think you have anything to worry about anytime soon.

Oh man, it's my new fave flavor that ice cream! :p

BTW, I see a sick joke brewing about the tuna... :D I'll refrain for my girls here

As for the DAYUM avi -- *grrr* it's not me. *pout* No wonder so many people love me though.

The gals know this but I'm a weight loss success story, now down to 158# at 5'5, lost 115# total (in the last year I put on 15-20# LBM too, so I'm a bulky girl, unlike the girl in my avi).

I'm having a surgery to fix the skin caused when I was 260# my whole life til age 19... so once that's done on May 29... I'll look BETTER than my avi. I can GUARANTEE ya' that. :qt:

*embarassed but it's true... I wish it was me!*

Please do save the tuna joke, I won't be able to eat it again if it's something really off, lol. :)

It's ok that the avi isn't you. Back in the day I would have pics of Flex Wheeler, Lou Ferrigno, etc all over the place. It's something all of us in this lifestyle do. It helps set a visual goal, which in turn becomes reality one day. If you work hard at it that is... and from the sounds of it, working hard is something you know all about :artist:

It's incredibly hard to do what you did! My wife was once a fashion model in Greece, then came to America and got depressed, gained lot's of weight. She went to 210lbs at 5'7. She brought it down to 110 and then we started adding the muscle. So I can only imagine how hard you've worked and how far you've come.

I'm currently 260 something or other and have had to gain over 100lbs of muscle to look this way. It wasn't easy but in the end it's all worth it. Losing or gaining. We all have to work hard. No easy way out ever and you've earned that knowledge. That makes you a thousand times better than that avi you have put up.

Good luck with your surgery. I'm sure it will turn out fantastic!

Btw... nothing wrong with being a 'bulky' girl. Nobody likes a Paris Hilton these days!!

I add a taablespoon of natural peanut butter to my protein shake in the evening. I drink it about an hour before bed. Fills me right up!
