Star Wars "Myth"

The Dude

New member
I don't get so many people ripping Attack of the Clones for this or that. If you've seen it and have seen the original trilogy (as an adult in the past few years), then you know it's story, acting, etc. are just as good.

Let's be honest about the first three. In A New Hope, as in The Phantom Menace, the acting was terrible. Some of the lines are down right laughable. But it was still a great tale and loads of fun. Now Menace did have a 9 year old protagonist (tough to overcome) and Jar Jar. That hurts but if you exclude those weaknesses, it was right on par with A New Hope.

Now, everyone loves Empire for it is dark and mythic. It had a great story (as did they all do, with Menace struggling because it's all back story) and improved effects. Clones is every bit as good as Empire on those merits. Sure, the Empire doesn't exist and you don't have Vader as a terrible villain, but it's a different trilogy.

What I'm trying to say is, you may not like the storyline of this trilogy, but the quality of the films (acting, story construction, effects, exotic stuff like creatures) is every bit as good as the first trilogy. The first batch didn't exactly win any screenplay, directing, or acting awards. It was all technical and A New Hope's best picture nomination (which sure as hell wasn't for acting or dialogue).

I grew up on Star Wars. Love 'em to this day. There is more of an attachment to the original trilogy because I was a child and it was magical back then. Nevertheless, Clones is every bit as good as Empire on all those merits I've cited.

Totally agree with that. I thought it was very entertaining and well worth my money. Too many people are expecting Gladiator in space or some kind of life-altering event. It's a movie, a PG one at that, and no worse than episodes 4-6.

everyone has their own opinions..........who gives a shit whether they like it or not...........fuck'em anyways

People are trying to compare a single movie to the totality of the trilogy.

It was entertaining and much better than episode 1.
I watched movies that were worse and some that were better.
The special effects were great.
Guess most people have to great expectations because of the media hype.

i totally agree. I'm not the hugest star wars fan out there, but I really really liked AOTC. Maybe I was really in the mood for that type of movie, but I came out there thinking there was no better way I could have spent that $10.

Haha, definately, like they go and pay a lousy 7 bucks for 2 and 1/2 hours and bitch because they didnt leave the theatre with a new kidney or that they aren't able to walk again if they were paralyzed, haha.

LET US PUT IT THIS WAY. IN 1977, TPM OR AOTC WOULD HAVE BEEN PHENOMENAL. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL.

NOW? THEY ARE RUN OF THE MILL ACTION FLICKS.

THAT IS THE DIFFERENCE. ANH WAS REVOLUTIONARY IN 1977, AND ESB AND ROTJ WERE IN THAT SAME SPIRIT.

20 YEARS LATER, YOU'VE GOT TO DO A LOT MORE TO BE REVOLUTIONARY AGAIN.

TPM AND AOTC FAILED TO DO THAT.

Heh. Run of the mill. Haven't heard that one yet. As Mace Windu would say, "that's a bold statement."

THEY ARE.

- THE SPECIAL EFFECTS ARE RUN OF THE MILL, IN THIS DAY AND AGE
- THE PLOT IS MEDIOCRE
- THE ACTING IS MEDIOCRE

Hey 2 ton, what sort of special effects in this day and age do you consider mind blowing (this oughta be a good example, can't wait)

THE MATRIX WAS DECENT, IN THAT IT HAD REAL PEOPLE DOING THINGS NEVER SEEN BEFORE ON THE BIG SCREEN. HOWEVER IT WASN'T MIND BLOWING.

STAR WARS WAS MIND BLOWING IN 1977. I SAW IT THE 2ND WEEK IT WAS OUT.

I DON'T RIGHTLY KNOW WHAT WOULD BE MIND BLOWING TODAY. BUT, THE SCENES ABOVE THE CITY OF CORUSCANT WHEN THEY WERE CHASING THE ASSASSIN CAME CLOSE. UNFORTUNATELY IT WAS NOT LIKE THAT THE WHOLE EPISODE, IN PARTICULAR THE FINAL BATTLE WAS RUN OF THE MILL.

So you're saying something doesn't meet a certain standard when you don't even know what your own standards are?

Man I think you just have it out for Starwars.

I DO NOT HAVE TO BE ABLE TO GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT I WOULD CONSIDER MIND BLOWING TO SAY THAT CERTAIN SPECIMENS ARE NOT.

IF I KNEW WHAT I WOULD FIND MIND BLOWING, I WOULD LIKELY BE IN THE MOTION PICTURE BUSINESS RIGHT NOW.

SO THAT EXPLAINS WHY I'VE SEEN EVERY STAR WARS MOVIE BUT THE FIRST IN THE FIRST THREE DAYS IT HAS BEEN PLAYING??

I LIKED THE FIRST THREE. I REALLY DID. PERHAPS IT WAS BECAUSE I WAS YOUNG. IN RETROSPECT, THEY WERE CHEESY DOGGEREL. BUT I LIKED THEM.

I can understand how someone who's not a Star Wars fan wouldn't like AOTC.

Now, I love the franchise, and episode 2 is possibly the best Star Wars movie I've seen. Better than A New Hope...even better than Empire...

I suggest reading this review by Harry Knowles of Aint-it-Cool News: http://www.aint-it-cool.com/display.cgi?id=12260

2 ton,

The first three were trivial, comic poems? Thats what a doggerel is afterall. :)

Or did you want to use the Middle English meaning?

Do you play AD&D?

I find most role-players use the word doggerel quite a lot.

RUN OF MILL special effects?

Hardly.

Before Episode One came out three years ago. The leader of special effects was Titanic with 550 special effect shots. Then Star Wars Episode One comes out with 2475 special effect shots, and now with Episode Two having 3250 special effect shots to say that they are run of mill is an understatement. You don't realize what ILM had to do to make this movie look real which they did an amazing job of.

The cool thing is that you obviously didn't catch all the special effects because you thought there were none. Well, that was ILM's whole plan to make fake things look real, and not obvious.
All thumbs up for Attack of The Clones.
