can someone explain to me what people mean by saying they bet a unit on a spread?

a spread is established to balance the weaker team vs the stronger team
a "unit" would be a guys standard bet
e.g. one unit =$200
if the guy really likes a bet he may bet 3 units or $600

ok thanks spartacus, I knew it was a certain amount of money but I couldn't figure it out. THanks curvymom I tried the google but my topic wasn't narrowing it down enough
