soy protein

What is the difference between soy protein and whey protein, other than soy is plant derived? Is one better for building muscle over the other?

Soy protein is derived from soybeans and has a Biological Value (BV) of 74. It lacks the amino acid methionine which is important for protein synthesis and the production of glutathione. Soy protein also contains protease (enzymes which digest proteins) inhibitors which block certain nutrient absorption and interfere with digestion. Soy is also high in estrogenic compounds which may increase your body fat levels. Many of the above problems have been overcome though with the introduction of Soy Protein Isolate.

Whey Protein is the powdered result of the liquid whey from the cheese industry. It has a very high BV rating. Look for the following listings on supplements you are using:

- whey protein isolate - absorbed quickly
- whey protein concentrate - a mix protein of milk solids, egg albumen and casein
- casein protein - slower absorption rate

Thank you for the help Kian, I had done a google search but was finding a lot of contradictory studies and no real basic explanation.
