Let us discuss positive vs negative psychology. Most psychology today is devoted to eliminating the negatives from our lives (hate, pain, fear, anxiety, depression) whereas positive psychology which tries to promote positives in our lives (charatability, social skills, happiness, resiliancy) is overlooked. For example, depressed people are less productive at work than average people, so psychologists try to eliminate depression. However happy people are more productive than average people. Depressed people are less charitable than average people, happy people are more charitable. This is causing alot of problems in the world as we are only using half of our potential skills, we are stopping mental growth once someone becomes average. I am reading some interesting articles on positive psychology right now. one is on the evolutionary biology of happiness and why modern culture is a threat to our own biologial drives for happiness.
A long time ago we evolved in societies that only consisted of about 50 people. Our choice of a mate was very limited, we had very close, lifelong relationships with large numbers of people in that group (immediate family, extended family, friends) and we had skills that set us apart (in a group of 50 people someone is always going to be the strongest, smartest, best hunter, most inventive, etc by far over the other 49). However we live in modern society now.
Modern society is fragmented. Instead of comparing ourselves with 49 people we compare with 49 million. There is no way to be the best at anything. Since self esteem is largely just a guage of how well we are living up to our expectations and since either those expectations don't exist anymore (it was alot easier thousands of years ago when brining in water from the river meant life or death compared to today when life has no real meaningful life/death purpose) or there is no way we can be the best people are suffering. Since there are no expectations and since even when we do get expectations there is no way we can beat out the people we see on TV (there will always be prettier, smarter, more productive people out there) self esteem issues have become a major crisis. This is probably why kids today turn to third world charities to find meaning in life. Maybe they are grasping at that meaning and self esteem they were evolved to have. We are evolved to feel that our work is life/death, because it was. Food, shelter, protection from predators and water were life/death thousands of years ago. now they are jsut a side effect of mind numbing jobs. So trying ot find a way to have a role in protection from life/death issues is becoming a way to reclaim that lost sense of meaning.
Another is that due to the lack of meaningful, lifelong bonds humans are turning desperately to some kind of human bond to make up for this lack, mostly romantic relationships. I think on some deep level people miss that lifelong bond that comes from being close to your parents, your siblings, your aunts/uncles/grandparents and several of the members of the small unit that you evolved in. As a result of that lonliness people are turning to romantic partners to try to fill that gap. This is making life more miserable because studies have shown high standards in a mate is one of the biggest predictors of unhappiness in romantic relationships. They also make the high standard haver come across as 'high maintenance' and therefore less desirable, so it is a catch-22 and everyone becomes more miserable. In japan I think peolpe turn to friends instead of dates for that kind of meaningful human bond but the problem persists.
