I think it was based on someone wanting to put out a movie about snipers. And they did a damn good job. That shit where the bullet goes through the scope in that dudes eye. That was high quality cinama at its best.

The Professional was good, but Sniper was far better. But everyone has their own opinions.
The professional was a pathetic attempt at the life of an assassin.
Sniper is based on Gysgt Hathcock USMC. The finest sniper in the world. He had 93 confirmed kills and probably a thousand more that were kills, but not confirmed. He started the Marines Corps current sniper schools. He was so good that a bounty was on his head by the Viet Con.
Sniper is an excellent movie and for anyone who does not believe any of what they saw, you better visit the USMC because it really happened and the crawling in the open field and not being able to be seen is as real as it gets.
They were wearing gilly suits.

The part where the round goes through the scope really happened. GnySgt Hathcock made that shot. Another more recent sniper movie is Enemy at the gate.

I remember a 20/20 piece on snipers, they interviewed one who was burned out because he kept seeing his kills in his dreams. That'd be fucked up.
Also they showed the guys with the gilly suits on and you can not tell that these people are moving towards you. It is friggin amazing!

I was on a Ranger Sniper team....Marine Scout Sniper schoolg, Sniper Instructor School, Special Forces Sniper School, Sniper Counter Sniper school...etc.
Gunny Hathcock was a civie instructor for awhile at Quantico at the instructor school....I did not like the man at all, but he earned my respect as an elite member of our armed forces....He died recently a few years ago in Virginia Beach...I attended family night....
His skill is, and always will be unmatched. I have trained with snipers all over the world, and as much as I would like to say the Army, or Rangers for that mattter are the best....I sadly cannot.
That honor belongs to the Marine Scout Snipers...they are without a doubt the best in the world....hands down, bar none. No one even comes close to them. I still have my Ghillie, to much work went into it to let it go....For something interesting, look up the history behind the Ghillie suits, and where, and how they got their name....
