SIM cards

do SIM cards transmit the type of phone being used to the service provider?

If I take my SIM card out of a Sony phone and put it in a Motorola, will my carrier know it?

Sim cards are matched to the service provider (carrier). So if the phone you want to switch to is from the same service company then yes you can switch it, brands of phone don't matter. But you can't take a phone from another carrier and switch sims.

if you have a phone that is 'unlocked' you can use it with any carriers sim card, providing they use them, of course. Yes it will relay your phone data and phone activation serial number everytime you turn it on or regain bars when you had none.
