Shoulder Surgery...overnight stay

beastboy

New member
Just found out that they want to keep me for 24 hours after my athroscopy(sp?) surgery...it was suppose to be outpatient. Anyone have to do this? Can I insist on going home if I feel fine?

Not at all! Said I will probably be in too much pain to go home...what the hell am I getting myself in to. I've talke to this one dickhead that had it done and he said it was no prob. I'm starting to think he lied to me!

Be a real man....get a hunting knife, some twine and a bottle of absynth and operate on yourself.

Did that once for my circumcision....took the hood when I was done, put it in a crock pot with some potatoes and carrots, and served it up for the family....it's a ritual.

Too much pain to go home?

That's what I was expecting. The doctor told me I would get the nerve block inserted into my neck prior to sugery. He said it would last 12 hours, but also said I would be in too much pain to go home. So that nerve block must not do shit! He also said I would have a cathider(sp?) in my shoulder till Saturday (surgery is this Thursday) for pain....he said I would remove it myself on Saturday. He said I am considered a 23 hour admin. and can leave in the evening if I'm 100% pain free. Things are not really making sense to me...I don't expect to be 100% pain free for a few weeks without pain meds. But if I have the nerve block and cathider in, that should keep me out of pain so I can go home.

I was expecting your timeline! Applebee's sounds good....and I need to bowl on Sunday!!!!!!!!!!!! And I have a Kid's Halloween party to throw for my daughter on Saturday!

My nerve block lasted 6 hours. My arm, much like my penis, was a complete wet noodle for those 6 hours. Couldn't feel a thing. Most of the pain was up in and around my traps. Like I said, there was slight discomfort to my body, in general, due to the sling, but all of this sounds really excessive.

Every doctor is different, though, and if you trust him, I guess you can't go wrong. Just sounds inconvenient to me.

Did you ask how long you have to stay in the sling? The nurse who discharged me told me 2 weeks (or until I saw my doctor for a follow up) and when my doctor called me on the 3rd day, he said I could have taken it off the day after surgery.

He told me to call the office the Monday after to discuss my follow-up and sling situation. But I may see him Friday morning if I stay the night.

I do trust him...actually there are 2 docs doing the procedure due to insurance purposes. They both have great reputations and know many of their patients (although not for this procedure) and have no complaints. My only thought is the one doctor looks to be somewhat young and may just take the "better safe then sorry route". His explanation for keeping me overnight was he would rather me stay there if the pain got to be too great, instead of having to come back up.

Why don't they just prescribe an oral pain med for you to take home with you. It's not like your having knee replacement surgery or something like that.

Nerve blocks only last about 1/3 the time they promise them. Be aware. Get home, get the ice ready. Get the mindless tv movies ready to watch while you are flying high off oxycotin or whatever.
