Should the Koran Be Required Reading?

Where's "The Church Chat Lady" when you need her?

Open a book and you open a mind....
Not every book. Kind of like saying "practice makes perfect", when in essence "correct practice makes perfect".

Nothing should be required reading, the muslims have a newspaper called the "Final Call", maybe some of you have seen some Muslims sell this paper on street corners and stop lights, its usually a well dressed black man selling the paper, well there is a saying that goes "I am not a Muslim but I read the Final Call, because within these pages there is something for us all", nothing should be required, but knowledge should always be acquired. peace

I was not talking the trash Harlequin's on the market, J.

Besides, who can say that ANY written word is correct? Many people can argue that our OWN American History is jaded and facts flawed when it was written. I was forced to read that shit in school!

First of all, honestly, if you were here right now, I'd take you to breakfast.
Second, I am not trying to argue with you, I agree with your words. peace to the Gabby

Are you American vb?

Did you go to college?

Did you take history courses there?

curiously yours,
aurelius

Am I American? Yes, I was born here in the U.S.A. My blood is French Canadian although. I'm sure other blood flows in these veins as well.

Did I attend College? Yes, I did attend College here in the States.

History major? No, I took the "typical" required history classes in school.

I see. Just wondering how you know that the way American history is taught is almost a complete lie. ( at lower levels)

A..I did not say it was complete lie!

OUR history is lacking on MANY level's though!

Ever hear of Salem Poor? I'm willing to bet that more than 1/2 of this board has NEVER heard of him either...

Yep, we were taught what the education system deemed fitting!

If we do not have prof's in the article you listed, we'd not be forced to open our eye's outside of the "box".

Fair enough, I said it was.

Lacking in perspective at the bottom, at the top... perhaps it´s too in style now to attack the past.

I edited my reply above you after seeing that I was not making myself clear enough( bad trait that I have- YOU all are suppose to read my mind- lol) Sorry!

I believe that anyone who open themselves to different views, past, present and future is a better person in the long run!

I TOTALLY agree with vixen in that we are not taught history at the high school level the way it should be taught and most people when they go to college may or may not take any history classes. I think people are intimidated by history...finding out who they are and where they came from.

As far as the Koran goes, absolutely not, should not be required reading but people can pick it up and read it if they choose because of all the conroversy surrounding that religion at the moment.

Why?
The bible isn't required reading.
The Book of Mormon isn't required reading.
The Dead Sea scrolls aren't required reading.
The Cathechism (sp?) isn't required reading.
American Indian cave drawings aren't required.
The Talmud isn't required.

Actually given that reading History is a fairly complex pursuit, school textbooks EVERYWHERE are forced to simplify - for example, presenting some more contentious stuff as facts instead of "here's a number of viewpoints on what these events signify" that you get in university history books... kids have to learn SOMETHING.

There is of course the Marxist theory (NOT economic theory) that the writer of the book actually creates the history by his point of view, that there is no objective record...

What generally happens is that elementary school history books are deadly boring as the interesting, and therefore contentious and debatable stuff, is left out.

Therefore I can imagine that when you elarn things are more complex than you learned in school, yuo might feel a bit peeved... but not every kid is clever and things have to be presented so everyone has a go at understanding the past...

"Required?" No.

..as an aside, what Westerner decided that Qur'an should start being spelled Koran?

Same reason the media decided that Usama Bin Laden should be Osama Bin Laden.

Same reason Prince went from a name to a symbol.

The same reason the Brady Bunch had an astro-turf yard.

No, fictional literature should always be optional. The Koran, the Bible, Hustler, it's all the same to me.

"Personal Finance for Dummies" is an example of something that should be considered required reading.

Well, no matter how you spell it you are using Roman letters, so it´s all inaccurate anyway.

um, since translating the Koran is prohibited by Islamic tradition, and it's in classical Arabic, you'd hvae lots of fun reading it in elementary school, unless the school was located in Egypt or Jordan....

Very WISE woman indeed,Circusgirl..... Or.....You have a VERY close friend who can translate it for you! Which could also cause a problem since some words are hard to translate from Arabic to English. Some of "our" words do not even have an translation!
