Shaving Tip #57

Mach 3 razors are great, but fucking $$$ for how long they last.

So...why the hell do razors get dull, anyways? They are made out of metal, no?

Answer: Regardless of how rock-hard and tough you may actually think you are, your skin/hair has nothing to do with why a blade goes dull. What actually occurs is mineral deposits on the blade's surface; hence, over time, the blade become duller as more deposits build up.

Solution: Store your razor in a small container of rubbing alcohol. This will prevent mineral deposits from building up, and that blade will last a helluva lot longer.

My Experience: I got this tip out of a Men's Fitness mag years ago; it seems to make the blades last a LOT longer, but they still need replacing. I usually get about a month out of one blade (versus a week if I just store it normally).

k 4 that. I go through truckloads of razors.

Damn dude, great post. Those Mach III blades aren't cheap!

I suspect that the alcohol will probably also leech the lubricant from the strip above the blades and make it uneven, reducing the usable life of the blade.

It does. The first time you sink a fresh blade in, the next day the strip will be toast. But those strips are a gimmick, anyways.

so keep the blade part in a small container of rubbing alcohol... good tip.. how much extra use does each blade get compared to being in rubbing alocohol and not being in it?

i got lucky and found a killer deal on ebay... bought 100 blades for around 15-20 bux

So, could you get the same effect by swipeing the blade with a q tip with alcohol on it?

Maybe, but I'd think it'd just be easier to keep it in a container. The Q-tip trick might be a good idea for travelling, though! K to you for that one. :)

an alternative: Norelco Advantage tripple headed electric razor

My beard has turned every electric razor so far into scrap metal. Either that or I'm not able to get an even shave.

Every electric I've tried shows up as five o'clock shadow at noon.

Tiger _ I am not sure I would buy razor blades off ebay - Were they normal?
Right. I guess if they were still sealed, but I don't know if I could trust something like that off ebay. It's pretty good for a lot of other things, though

wow... quality post.

I will try this starting tomorrow... indeed Mach III blades are too pricey to throw away so soon, I almost want to cry when I have to discard one every 3 days, ridiculous... hopefully this will resolve some of that sadness, lol.

Ebay for blades!! Never thought of that, damn. Good idea... I've sold many things (even a car) and bought tons of stuff on there, never thought of even searching for bulk blades!

Quality posts, potential to save a good amount of money!
