Shared drives now have $ on the shared name

All the shared drives in my home network have changed their name, they now have the drive letter and "$" next to it. It will not alow me to change this name. f I try to look at the share properties, it tels me that the drive has been shared for administrative purposes and i cannot change it. If I disable sharing, it resets it self when I restart. What gives? Is some one highjacking my BW and PC?

Try running AV and Adware, but aside from the usual spyware entries, nothing is found.

Those are default shares created on ALL nt4/2000/xp computers, so admins can connect and do things. The $ sign makes it hidden so it won't appear network neighborhood. If you really want to share files you need to make NEW shares without a $ in them. Leave those alone.

Thanks
So wat happened to the sharing settings that I had set up? I have a 20g drive that all I use it for is to store albums, vids and any media shit. Now I can't get to it from my lap top.

There was probably a dropdown list of all the share on that drive. The $ ones usually list first.

Yup... what they said. They are there by default.

Just create new ones with the names you like, leave them alone. You can share it under all the names you want.

The drop down only shows the $ name. Fuck, I am sick of trouble shooting today.

I just got a new lap top and it took me all morning to get the wireless working on it. I have a brand new siemens 802.11b wireless that i hadn't used so I tried installing it ad that shit kept cutting off from the network every 2 or 3 mins. After hours of uninstalling and re-installing i finally went on the net and found that it is a common defect of that card and XP. What a POS. Luckily I have this Linksys card.

Back to the networking issue.

Depending on the OS you're using there should a "New Share" button on there somewhere. I'm sure where the old shares went but it shouldn't be hard to recreate them. If you have to do this continually there's a problem though.

Thanks for the help buds.

Using XP; wound up creating new shares. I got it all working now. I'm just confused as to what happened to the original share. Oh well, cest la vi, cest la vie.

I use partition magic to rename the drives, letters, etc.
