Septoplasty

I know this isnt gear related, but I hope somebody can shed some light for me. Recently I was diagnosed with a deviated septum. I have had breathing issues for years and finally found out why. The fix is a procedure called septoplasty. The doctor said that I will only be out of the gym 10-14 days. Since i started training 6 years ago i have only missed 7 in a row so doubling the time is a little scary. Has anybody had the procedure? If so, is the 10-14 days a good estimate for time out of the gym. What about nutrition? I am assuming that it might be difficult to cook (ie...standing and bending over). Any ideas on how to keep my caloric intake high would be great. Thanks!

one of my girlfriends had it done, she did not work out, but most of her soreness was gone in about 14 days.
as for the nutrition: maybe some high calorie high protein shakes?

i've had it done. you will be hurting, but the breathing improvement is more than worth it. take the opportunity to enjoy the meds.

i was back at the gym 10 days later.

i'd increase your protien intake to 70-80% of your total calories. should help minimize atrophy.

10-14 days? You got to be kidding me bro! YOu have no idea what you are in for. They will cut the cartilidge in your nose and properly align it. Then your ENT doc will then pack your nose with sillicone tubes which will keep them aligned. The first 3 days, you will be in some serious - probably the most painful - pain in your life. Stay high on the percs for a while :) Then, you will have those tubes in your nose for a week. You will then get your post op procedure done and he'll take them out. This surgery will completely kick your body's ass. I asked my doc about working out also and he told me to lay off of the gym for about a month. I thought to myself that this guy must be tripping, but honestly, that surgery wore me out so bad, that I didn't even work out for almost a month and I was still having problems getting back into it 2 months later.

You are doing some serious work on your body, so let yourself just go for a while - muscle will grow back bro.. :) It takes time to heal.

Thanks for the input, but the procedure is different than you think. There is no packing. Along with this there is no bruising, swelling, or black eyes. Ill be back at work 5 days after the surgery. Doc said 3, but what the hell, I might aswell milk it for a week off. Thanks again guys!

When I had my deviated septum fixed, it was hell. I had both nostrils fully packed for 3-4 days. My sinuses were unable to drain, so my head felt like it was gonna explode. I was popping vicodin every couple hours and it barely helped. Having the packings removed fawkin' sucks too. Painful stuff...
It's like a damn tampon is being yanked out of your nose...

I dont know what u call what they did to me but basically they broke or rebroke a bone in my nose...i also have a deviated septum..it hurt like a mother fucker for about 4 days..then all pain was gone except a little soreness...i dont know if this is anything like ur getting I just found that nose pain doesnt keep me out of the gym easily

bro, i had a deviate septum and a nose spur. He didn't break my nose, just cut the cartilidge up in there and realigned everything. If you are getting your deviated septum fixed, there's only really one way of doing it, and that's by cutting or breaking and then realigning and then packing it. How else do you think it's going to grow back right? They must pack it either with gause or with sillicone tubes. Then when they pull that crap out , it's like TOTAL RECALL...

gl either way..if i were you, i hope this is an ENT and I hope it goes well for u
