I got the feeling that Maggie Gyllenhall's character really was afraid of the guy. Real BDSM scenes that I've been exposed too are more playful. The characters in the movie were either dominant or submissive the entire time. They never seemed to treat each other like normal people at any time.

I see what you are saying. But I also think that was the charm of the movie - the constant mix of akwardness, sexuality and desire between the two that was even more prevelant since the worked together. Maybe not the most accurate portrayal for those deep in the BDSM scene, but good enough for the majority of the people out there
