Save Martha?

If you had millions or even 500 large in some stock, and your broker calls and warns what the fu** are you going to do? The same damn thing - GET OUT!!

This is crazy, she is guilty or whatever, but everyone on that jury and in that court room would have done the same thing.

I have had more than one person explain to me why she is on trial. I understand that it is fundamentally wrong, but you're right. Anyone would have done the same thing, and I guess I don't really understand why it is so wrong. Of course, I'm far from a finance expert. I stay away from the stock market and all that. My best friend is a finance major who doesn't like writing. Needless to say, we don't discuss our chosen fields that often.

That's the sick bit, though -- it was only like 30K.

Bizzare, ja. What if she had said "Place a stop-loss on it at $60" or maybe one dollar below whatever it was trading at? If she had done that for real, would that mean she would then be telling the literal truth when asked about the sale? If she had done it that way, would it have blown away the case against her?

The stock market makes my brane hurt. The idea that you can know something but have to stand there like the knife-thrower's assistant is just unreal.

Exactly, Digger....what's someone worth nearly a billion doing risking insider trading to save less than 30K? It's the most disgusting example of greed I've ever seen. That's why I'm hoping she does some hard time.

So there is a point where you should be forced to lose your money?

Ever figure that rich people are rich BECAUSE they monitor every dollar, unlike the masses who spend without thought?

This case is nothing more than the normal class warfare. Martha Stewart is punished because she is rich and commited a "victimless" crime, the crime of having money. She is being presented as this greedy bitch, while government officials squander taxpayers money by the billions with no accountability.

Stewart made the mistake of desiring to keep her property, while the government freely wastes our money under the auspices of "social good".

atlantabiolab,

She broke the law, plain and simple. White collar crime is hardly victimless...ask the people who used to work for Enron...and all the companies left holding the bag on their debt. Insider trading is a crime, and Martha Stewart is not above the law. If people like her were permitted to manipulate the stock market as they saw fit, the whole system would collapse. Nobody 'forced' Martha to lose her money....she gambled on a stock and then couldn't accept it when she lost. If you don't want to lose, then don't gamble.

i feel bad for her, i woulda done the same thing.

The saddest part of the whole story: this shit happens every day. Martha got caught, and because she is a "popular" figure she is getting roasted in the limelight. MANY people with money made their green based on "tips", most get away with it.

Exactly, and for those that say it's not fair, how about if you had a couple of thousand in that stock and were not privy to the same info Martha had? You would have lost a bundle obviously and likely couldn't afford it like Martha can. How would you feel then knowing she saved herself some bucks cause she's buddies with the CEO and you lost a couple of years savings cause you're just a peon? I'll tell you how I'd feel.....

Those who are public figures are watched much more closely on everything they do. Bush's daughters and their problems, Al Gore's son, Martha and insider trading, etc. Society just waits for these people to screw up so we'll have something to talk about next to the water cooler the next morning. These incidents are no less common among the "average" families of America, but they simply aren't as noticeable.

She is a victim of her fame.
Those who are educated enough to be on her jury and understand the twisted SEC laws will more than likely love or hate her.

Your average juror (mostly ethnic) will hate her simply because she's some rich white lady who is cleaner than they are.

Lumping all white collar crimes together does not work. They are not equivalent. What Stewart did was nothing compared to Enron. Who did Stewart harm? Whose money did she steal?

Insider trading is a crime, and Martha Stewart is not above the law.

I did not state that her actions were not illegal, merely that all laws are not logical or moral. It is against the law to possess marijuana in the states; do you think that people should spend years in prison for this "crime", when no one was harmed?

What the hell do feelings have to do with this? Do you really believe that all investors have the same knowledge base from which they make decisions? How many day traders who buy an infomercial product, claiming to make them rich from investing, lose their savings? Do you really think that those who walk in the realm of the elite, are not privy to more knowledge than Joe Average? If you concede this fact, then why do you believe that they should not have the right to make decisions, purely for self-interest, on such information? Because this information is not spread equally to the masses?

This is pure egalitarian crap. It is OK to succeed only if everybody wins.

and you appear to be, or at least support, an elitist snob who feel that they are above the fray and shouldn't have to answer to the same laws as the rest of us.

It's not a matter of everybody wins, it's a matter of leveling the playing field so everyone has a chance to win (or lose).

Umm, last I checked she *was* innocent, since her trial had yet to deliver a verdict.

Wow, welcome to 6 months from now!
