I wonder what type of coverage this would be getting if we weren't in the middle of a war, right now. Me thinks the WHO is happy that it's relegated to page 20 of the papers, lest a panic ensue.
The normal mortality rate for influenza is between 0.1% and 0.49%. The mortality rate for SARS is already 3.5%. I'm sure that will substantially decrease when and if they identify the cause and develop a treatment.
Conspiracy theorists may immediately think it's bioterrorism, but I would think, more likely, it's Mother Nature flexing her muscles.
From everything i'm reading, this seems pretty serious, though. It appears that it is spread very easily and until a treatment is developed, there could be a very high death rate.
