your lookin at 5 stars near santa monica.Shutters on the beach,and the Fairmont are nice.But if you head a little inland(a mile or so),you can hit best western,or something to that effect off santa monica blvd.
well there is loews on the beach, but the best one location wise is marina-pacific hotel, it is one block from venice beach, and like 4 blocks from golds gym, you can send me a private message, I can get you some free passes for like 3 days to golds in venice, and tell you where all the spots in LA are, you can check out the marina pacific hotel, they got a website, just search it on the net, and it will come up.

Just don't venture too far into Hollywood looking for gyms. The 24hr fitness in Hwood and Bhills are swamped with pillowbiters. That Crunch is pretty bad too from what I hear.. Venice Golds is supposed to be the hardcore... but haven't been yet.
best gyms are:
golds gym venice
world gym marina del rey
black diamond, for the hoodstars
then it goes to ballys, 24 hour fitness, and then besides that they all suck except for golds.....golds is the best guys, wouldnt even waste my time anywhere else, and if your a student or have a student ID its only 30 bucks a month

yeah, i stayed at the best western off santa monica blvd. the santa monica pier is walking distance. so is venice beach. 3rd street (or whatever number it is) is just a few blocks from the hotel. it's the strip of clubs and shopping that is like a block from the beach. plus if i remember correctly, they have an i.h.o.p. restuarant in the hotel.
