how long does a rotator cuff surg, keep you out of doing upper body, and can i get on some gear while im recovering to help me maintain and not lose a ton?>?
any advice appreac.
peace

You can "get back on it" as soon as you "feel" up to it... it might hurt the healing process.

I have a MAJORLY fucked up shoulder, rotator cuff, ligament, etc...
Work on the felxability of your shoulder... I use an exercise called "Joe Namiths" -- after the football player... I don't know the real name... those build up your R-cuffs.

Hey bro, I just had mine done about 5 weeks ago. I am almost pain free as far as normal range of motion goes, but as far as doing anything with any kind of weight on it is still out of the picture. I work as a physician assistant for an orthopedic group also so I know what to do and what not to do. I am probably going to be out of the gym, except for cardio, for about another 4-6 weeks. The last thing you want to do is try to hurry things up cause you end up doing more harm than good. This is the hardest thing for me right now because I really wanted to compete in a contest this spring, which is now totally out of the picture. The best advice is give it all the time to heal as you can. I may actually give mine till the beginning of the year. Just keep up the cardio so you dont get fat, and still get your monthly package from your source so you have something to look forward to when you get started again.

For any soft tissue repair process, it takes about 8 weeks for regular weigthbearing activity, such as lifting yourself out of bed or pushing out of a chair. If you do anything like that before 8 weeks at least, you risk tearing the muscle from its insertion. There are certain exercises you can do with the shoulder before weightbearing such as Codman's exercises. Bend over and let your arm hang, then rotate it in circes. You can also do some wallwalking a few weeks after that. Stand next to a wall and "walk" your hand up the wall. Stop when it feels tight or hurts.

To get back to weightlifting a decent weight, id say 6 months. But everyone is different.

It depends on what you want to do.

cuff..

ok
i have full range of motion, i hurt a at certain angels of moving and had an mri done and doc said i had a partial tear and poss full tear in other tendon. my question is how come i can still do most all my shoulder excercises and bench, now it does hurt when i get to around 250lbs on bench, cant do incline at all only light wieght and i know that stresses it the most, do you think i could have a full tear and do side laterals??? im not sure what to think, if i get surg, can i do some juice to help heal and maintain mass while not being in gym???>

thx

There are different stages of an RC tear.....I, II, IIIa and IIIB, and IV. Surgery isnt indicated for I, isnt indicated for II and III unless you already failed physical therapy. It is indicated outright for stage IV. If you are already seeing a doc, then do what he says. If you dont trust him or believe him, then get a second opinion from someone who doesnt know him.

The reason it doesnt hurt for bench press is cuz you arent using your supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, or subscapularis except for stabilizing your motion. Dumbbell bench will hurt alot more than flat bench. Those are the muscles of your RC by the way.

i had shoulder surgery in jan, when the pain first came on i could'nt even put my hand in my pocket it hurt so fuckin bad,i thought for sure it was my rotator cuff,i went from benching 435 for reps to not even being able to push up an empty bar.it took 7 months to diagnose the problem fuckin HMO'S,it turned out to be bone spurs in my ac joint that were puting pressure on my RC,
surgery was a breeze, was lifting 3 weeks after pain free, mri did not show the problem it took a plain old x-ray.i suggest you have your doc order up an xray see if thats your problem.
