Roid Rage

Roid Rage

Roid rage is the most discussed behavioral side effect attributed to anabolic steroids. It is the most heavily covered topic in the media, and one of several factors which have given steroids the less than positive reputation they have. The term “roid” is short for steroid, and the “rage” which they are referring to is intense anger which some believe is attributed to the use of anabolic steroids.

The term “roid rage” has been around since the mid 1980s or thereabouts. It was used in some court cases by actual lawyers who wanted to use it as a defense strategy. There have been several cases in the past where the issue has come up in court cases involving domestic violence, or other physical assaults. Although the jury has not yet accepted “roid rage” as a cause for these assaults, the media has done a thorough job to add hype to the issue.

Media Attention

In the early 1990's, viewers were presented with a series of cases regarding incidents of violence (domestic or otherwise) involving individuals who were said to have been meek and mild, and had transformed to violent perpetrators of crime as a result of rage caused by the use of steroids. What the viewers were not told, was that in nearly every case examined, the individuals had a history of violence before being charged with a
criminal offense. The presence of alcohol was also apparent in most cases. The general case was one involving an individual with a history of violence and alcohol use physically assaulting or even murdering someone (often a girlfriend or wife). Generally
speaking, steroids are given the entire blame for such incidents by the media. The facts that the individual involved had a history of violence and alcohol seems to be ignored. Discussing roid rage in the media is an exciting topic, as the usual topics of the use and abuse of other, more prevalent drugs quickly become stale.

Professionally Speaking

Many professional individuals, whether psychologist or otherwise, have taken the same stance as the media (ignoring the past history of the perpetrator), and written medical reports and psychological papers on the evils of anabolic steroids, and the side effect of roid rage. As would be expected, when a topic of roid rage is discussed and accepted in a medical or psychological journal, it is then accepted by the general public and the media is further allowed to feed on the inaccuracies and unproven facts
presented. Many professionals write articles on roid rage because the topic is generally criticized by the general public, and psychologists and doctors will be accepted and praised for feeding the public with the information they desire, where
remaining “objective” with a disclaimer such as “this has not yet been fully proven, but has been established” or “a positive correlation [although incredibly slight] has been noted in cases of domestic violence and steroid use by the perpetrator”.

As new side effects continue to be created by the media, roid rage has become more and more accepted by society as a whole. However, with the public in the grey on this topic, and the professionals willing to support the hype to prevent being shunned or retaliation in the form of possible career liability, the portrayal of this and other side effects of steroids will never be fully reflected in terms of reality over hype.

Aggression

While the present evidence for roid rage is sketchy at the very best, many steroid users will admit to becoming more easily agitated while on a cycle. However, this does not
mean they will immediately become attackers, or murderers, or even take out their aggression more often in the form of punching a heavy bag. Although aggression levels are elevated, the degree of this elevation is almost always related to pre - steroid aggression levels. If someone has a timid personality before using steroids, steroid use will not likely make any difference at all in terms of displays of aggressive behavior.
Steroid use will generally only affect those individuals already aggressive prior to their cycle in an adverse way. As always, steroid related aggression can often be related to
circumstantial factors, and not at all related to the use of the drugs themselves. The simplest solution from there is to attach the damage done to the drug consumed to conclude the topic quickly.

Steroid - Related Aggression in Reality

Speaking in practical terms, steroid users who experience higher levels of aggression while cycling generally keep this extra intensity in the gym where it belongs.
