The border search exception has been expanded to searches significantly removed from the actual border crossing under the so-called "extended border" doctrine. For example, Dianne Wright was subjected to such a search prior to her arrest and prosecution (981 SW2d 197, a case examined in Chapter 8: Border Blues). The doctrine is described in the context of international mail in Chapter 18.
