Do you guys do this?
Pre-liminary coffee filtering is a regretable nuissance that should be used only by compulsive individuals or if previous steps were not performed well and pre-filtering is inevitable..
Ideally, the oil is drawn of the top of the mix after the vial has been permitted to sit at least overnight. A narrow gauge pin is used for this and the oil submicron filtered. The few mLs remaining that cover the gunk are not bothered with.
The gunk that's conveniently left behind in the vial contains product that will be reserected later. If no pharm-quality oil is available, 5-10ml or so of Wesson oil is added to the sludge, vial stoppered tightly and it is allowed to sit in the dark until the next time around.
When it's time for the next batch, the oil sitting nicely on top of the sludge in the old vial is pulled off and added to the new batch during or after the oil addition.
The up sides-- Coffee filters are never used. This is a source for product loss and in general, just a messy pain in the ass.
The downside- Not all of the product is obtained for the FIRST since the last few mls on top of the sludge are left... But this only makes for a slightly weaker FIRST batch.. Each subsequent batch will be the same.
