SAN LEANDRO — FBI agents and San Leandro police officers arrested a man in San Leandro on Saturday on charges of manufacturing and distributing steroids, according to an FBI statement.
Jesse Abundiz, 34, was arrested at his mother's home and taken into custody without incident based on a federal indictment filed in Nevada, the FBI said.
Abundiz allegedly is the owner and operator of Morning Star Labs, an Internet-based lab that operated out of Nevada and California, according to the FBI. Abundiz reportedly used multiple aliases and company names to purchase medical-grade laboratory equipment for an underground steroid lab.
The FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration began investigating when information received from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol indicated Abundiz was using a Sacramento post office box to receive packages of raw or pure steroid powder, according to the FBI.
After a 19-month investigation, a warrant search was conducted in December at a residence in Las Vegas that was used by Abundiz and owned by his mother, the FBI said.
At the residence, investigators apparently found an "operational underground steroid lab" containing controlled substances and lab equipment with a street value of roughly $1 million, the FBI said.
Vials, syringes, beakers, medical-grade vacuum pumps, butte stoppers, label makers and labels reading "Morning Star Labs" reportedly were recovered.
About 400,000 dosage units, or roughly 11 kilograms of controlled substances that included anabolic steroid powders, were recovered at the residence, according to the FBI.
FBI spokesman Steve Dupre said the investigation is continuing. Dupre would not comment on whether Abundiz's mother was being investigated and said Dupre most likely would be extradited to Nevada, where the federal indictment was filed.
