I know this sounds trivial but with all of the problems I had at this school last year, it grates on my nerves. They have a fucking rule for everything!

I have two daughters at a public elementary school near my house. I just got off the phone with the principal at my daughter's elementary school. I usually pick them up which means I have to wait in a long car line that usually takes at least 25 - 30 minutes from the time I get in line to the time I actually pick them up. Directly across the street from the school is a business which the business owner is a very good friend of mine.

I talked to him over the weekend about letting me park in his parking area(which is very small) and wait on my daughters to cross the street (A crossing guard stops traffic) and I can pick them up and I never have to get near the busy traffic at this time of the day.

He said that was great and he even offered to watch the kids in case I was late picking them up but I told him I wouldn't do that to him. Anyway, my kids walked across the street and got in my car without anything unusual happening but my oldest daughter told me, "the principal told me to tell you that you couldn't park in a place of business parking lot!"

I told her that I had permission and it was okay. I called the principal and told her I had permission and everything was okay but she said it was against district policy to do that. I thought....wtf!

After a lengthy discussion with her, she said, I could let the kids walk to that business and I could walk from home and meet them there and then walk back home! WTF........what is the difference!?!?!?!?!?!

I have about had it with this principal and the school and all of their "precious rules" that cannot be broken for any reason! Like I said, I know it sounds trivial but if you could have experienced what my wife and I did last year....I think you could understand this!

this will work best if you have a big-ass truck, but try it anyway:

Park your car right in front of the doors to the school. I mean right on the grass, or better yet, on the walk-way leading into the school.

Ask the principal if she'd prefer you to park here or the parking lot across the street.

Because of the "I sue you for anything" nature of the US schools and other places make rules for everything to cover their ass. Not sure if it applies here. That´s what "zero tolerance" is about, though.

Im sure she is acting like a puppet reiterating instructions from the police who have probably had to listen to complaints from business owners who have parents (they dont know) that take it upon themselves to park in the lots taking up valuable space while waiting for their kids.
I'm sure the principal hears from all parents that they know the business owners even though most of them are probably making it up. So to make it fair for all (even if she believes you) she just says to not park there. The next thing you know is that everyone else being frustrated from having to wait 20 min to park will see you and then do the same thing. Before long you have a mess and it all goes back to the one guy who parked there because he actually knew the owners. All in all it's easier to say no dont park there and wait like everyone else has to do.

She can't tell you where to park off of school property! She can only tell you where you MUST pick up the girl's ON SCHOOL PROPERTY!

What were her reason's for you parking across the street that caused her such worry?

When I was in school the bus driver stopped at a street where no one lived. Everyone that rode the bus lived down another street that was 1/2 mile from the scheduled stop. At the beginning of the year the driver would just drive us the extra 1/2 mile and drop us off. The school board made him stop doing that because it wasn't an official stop.
Yep, the lawsuits have destroyed common sense.

BodhiDharma..............I agree!

Code....I have a 4-wheel drive Suburban.....do you think that will do?

pOink.....been there, done that...got the receipts for six years worth!

aurelius......yes, "zero tolerance" is the key here but I believe in extinuating circumstances.

VicTusDeus....that is the same angle she is taking. I personally believe if I am off of school property, it shouldn't be any of her concern what I do.

Vix......she said that the school district was trying to cut down on the number of kids walking home because of safety purposes. There is a crossing guard and where they cross the street is about 50 feet from where I wanted to pick them up.

Fast Twitch Fiber........I agree with you also. Common sense is lacking at this school and I will give you an example in a minute.

manny78.....I know you are kidding but I am not the suing type. LOL!

This school is concerned for the child's safety but last year when it rained, I called the school to tell them not to let my daughter walk home and I would pick her up. They told me, I had to come down there and give them a written statement before they could do that. You have to understand, I talked to the secretary (which I dated her daughter for a while years ago!) and the principal has known me for 25 years! Needless to say, they let my child walk home in the rain, thunder and lightning...while I was sitting in line waiting to pick her up! Child safety and common sense must have taken a holiday that day! I was still in line when my cell phone rang and it was my daughter calling me from home telling me she was soaking wet and was getting in the shower to bathe. I was ill as a hornet and I let them know it too! Reason for not telling her not to walk......"It was against school policy for them to accept a verbal request over the phone....it had to be written." That is just one instance of what happened last year.

No. For one the few times in my life I wasn't kidding at all. You have all the rights to park wherever you want. No joke. If some kid can ask millions cause his paper on Jesus was rejected then you should at least get something around 500 000$ in punitive damages.

I agree with you about, I can park anywhere that I have permission to park. It shouldn't concern her because it isn't on school property. Such frivalous lawsuits are what is hurting society today as a whole. Although I still might call the school superintendent over this, suing is not what I am after. :)

yeah but at least threat them. Just the fear of being sued should be enough.

Because of all of the shit that happened last year concerning my child, My wife and I met with the School Superintendent two times this summer and voiced our concerns about what was going on at this school and how they treated our child, so I am probably on a (and/or)her shit list for some time to come. I think she is splitting hairs with me and trying to reinforce her power to me. That's fine with me but I will not let her boss me around off of school property. So, in the end, I will probably be at the top of her shit list by the time school is over or maybe sooner. She knows I will call the school superintendent at the drop off a hat and that is probably what I will do.

I am an elementary school teacher and I have never heard of such thing! At the school where I taught, there was a business parking lot across the street and 80% of parents waited there to pick up their children...with no problems.

Like others have said, once your children are off school property, they are out of her hands. And if you, as the parent, want choose to pick your child up across the street, you have every right to do so.

If talking to her and explaining the situation didnt help, maybe you should talk to the superintendent about it.
Good luck!

:)

I was hoping a school teacher would respond to this. My wife is Jr. High teacher and she said the same thing to me about this. She said it goes on at her school everyday and it's no big deal.

Your stance is the same as mine. Once they cross the street and off of school property, they are no longer her problem. I talked to her about this and she was very adamant about me parking across the street. I told her, I didn't think anything of it because I had permission from the business owner but she said it was district policy not to let parents use private property to pick up their kids. That's just bullcrap and I have a good mind to go to the district school board meeting to express myself.

We suffered through a very bad year this past year and I will no longer bite my tongue because of passiveness. The passiveness came last year because my wife is a district employee and troublemakers are looked down upon and sometimes they are blackballed. We live in the South and this district is very political and is part of the "Good 'Ole Boy Politics" system. When I met with the district superintendent this summer, I even expressed my concern over this type of system and, of course, she denied it but I flat out told her she didn't have enough breath in her body to convince me otherwise.

what could they do to you if you keep it up???

That's a good question I don't have an answer to.

I called the business owner tonight and told him about what had happened. He said that however I wanted to approach this, he would stand behind me. So, at least I have his support on this for whatever it's worth.

The principal offered to me her solution to the problem. She said I could wait until almost 3:00 p.m. to pick them up when the traffic was easing up but I told her I wasn't really interested in that because that would mess up my schedule (posting on Elite)! :lmao: j/k

I think she is testing me to see how far she can go with me before I bite back.

another female acting like a fucking cunt because she is on a power trip. wow, that's a shock. tell her to fuck off and get your lawyer on the phone and raise hell.

What you can tell the principle is that she can pucker up and kiss your ass.

Keep picking up your kids the way you are presently doing it, she has no power to prevent you from doing this.

It's funny that you say this because in all of our district schools (about 30), there is 1 male principal. Nothing against women being principals but whatever happened to male principals. The ones who could instill fear in your heart by just a look. I would fear male principals before a female but that is just my opinion.

cockdezl...I think I will push the issue just to see how she will react!

where do these schools get off these days??

next thing you know they will be telling your kid who they can right letters to and if Jesus is alive!!!

I really dont see what she could do to you or your children for picking them up across the street. I mean, its not like she could give your children detention for it or anything right? :)

Sounds to me, like she is just being a bitch...plain and simple. The only thing I can think of for her reasoning, would be that by picking up your kids across the street, you avoid alot of the traffic and she thinks its not "fair". But even that should not be a complaint or a concern, especially if you have permission from the business owner, which you do.

I would def. just continue to do the same thing you have been doing. If she continues to hound you about it, I would take it above her head, and talk to the Board of Education in your county. Make them pull out the School Handbook and show you in print where it says that you cannot pick your children up across the street...bet they wont be able to do that....:D

BTW, you mentioned you lived in the South...where abouts are you from? I am a teacher in a "southern" county myself...so I was just wondering...:)

South Carolina......but don't tell anybody! :lmao:

West Virginia! I have even been to Mason-Dixon Elementary School...talk about some "different" kids...lol

But, seriously, I would just continue to do what you have been doing and dont worry about it. And like I said, if you need to, go above her head on this one.

Oh, I will!

She made me so mad today that I told my wife that I refused to go the first PTO meeting tonight and now I wished I had gone and not been so stubborn because I found out later tonight a lot of things were discussed that I should have not missed but oh well!

The one thing that makes me the angriest is that I have known this woman for a very long time and we are both active in our church and see each other every Sunday and all of the things that happened last school year, I was hoping this year would be different....but I can already tell that is not going to happen.

Hey b fold! Feel like flipping another car?

Seriously, tell that lady to fuck off. And by all means, keep picking yourkids up across the street.

i went through alot of this with my sister,my parents work alot or really dont pay alot of attention to what goes on in our school lifes so i went to the parent teacher things for her and the new rules brought in were no sleevless shirts boys or girls,no water bottles as people were being sprayed with water im so glad that was her last year and now she is in my high school where i can watch her closer, the rules arent as bad where i go and hopefully will stay that way

How old is she and how far is the walk? I kind of like walking in the rain.

She had just turned 9 years old and the walk is only a few blocks. The thing that bothered me was that it was pouring rain, it was thundering and it was lightning all around and she was rolling a metal book bag behind her.

I see. A rolling bag! How European! Next thing you know she´ll be asking for wine with lunch.

Have you child stand out front... then in front of everyone start flipping out.. crying and having a coniption fit.saying... "Daddy...Daddy.. principal(whatever) just hit me"

that should fix the principle for a little while.

Man, I hate to throw a bucket of Ice water on this good heated debate but I feel so lucky with our new School.
Especially with drop offs and pickups.

They have it down to a science. It's a large private Elements School

Drop off..
They have the entrance parking lot roped off to a single lane coming in and have stationed 5 older kids as safety patrols in a row
You drive up, and 5 cars at a time pull up to one of the kids stations and you all stop.
This nice kid opens your car door, says good morning and your kid hops out.
She/He says "have a great day and closes your door like a frickin valet.
You pull out and 5 more cars move in.

Pickups are exactly the same
The kids wait in a big area in front of the school roped off from cars and parents pull up in a line and your kid jumps in again 5 cars at a time.

Even at the busy times I'm through this thing in 2 Min...

Good luck

Yea, that's basically what we have here minus the 5 kids opening and closing doors. The kids get out at 2:30 but the parents start lining up at 2:00. We have to drive in front of the school to the end of their property and come down a dirt road to the back of the school to pick them. By the time I get there (around 2:40 to avoid the rush) the line wraps from the back of the school to the front road and all the way back to the main road. There are buses trying to get into the front and crossing guards halting traffic for the walkers and our main employer is changing shifts! It's just a real big cluster fuck to say the least.....hence my reason for picking them up across the street.

By the way, I did the same thing again today that I did yesterday and as I was loading my kids into the car, I saw the principal motioning me to come to her! :finger:.....what do you think I did? Absolutely nothing but waved back at her and got in my car and left. :lmao:

tomorrow, wave and blow her a big kiss..
the next day, cross yourself
give her a bunch of those 3rd base coach's signals
