One time in the 1990s I saw Pete Townshend on Letterman's show. He played "Pinball Wizard" solo acoustic on a Gibson J-200, then at the end of the song he smashed the guitar to pieces. In the interview he said that the remains of the guitar were to be auctioned off for charity.
He had a big bandage wrapped around his right hand that night. Apparently the night before he had played in some charity all-star benefit event, borrowed Eric Clapton's Strat, did a windmill, and speared his right hand on the tremolo arm. It went all the way through.
