Hello folks, this is my first post in this forum, I'm usually off talking gear or weights. I had a conversation with a coworker the other day that got me thinking. He is black, I am white. He's a pretty cool guy but could not explain something so I figured I would post it here.
Why is is ok or at least more acceptable for non white people to be racist?
It seems like more and more when I turn the TV or radio on, I hear "whitey, cracker, honky, the man etc, etc" and it's funny and even acceptable. But if a white person makes a comment that even hints or heaven forbid calls a black person black instead of "african american" they are slammed as racist and raked over the coals. Last time I checked an african american would be someone that was born in africa and now lives in the USA or has become a legal citizen of the USA. A person who is black and is born in the USA would be an american right? I have friends of all colors and we are always telling jokes about blacks, whites, mexicans, indians, etc.....they are just jokes and we all know there is nothing to it. Other than the joking they never call me racist names and I of course treat them the same. I am not a racist, don't have racial tendencies and always try and treat others as I would like to be treated but this is never enough. I never call a black person a nigger or a mexican a spick or whatever, but yet I am whitey and it's almost wrong to defend myself. No matter what I do or say or how respectful I treat someone, I am a racist just because I am white. How can the definition of prejudice apply to only white people in some peoples minds? This double standard is just starting to get to me, and honestly, a lot of the white people I know are tired of it as well. How can someone who is non white not see the logic in what I am saying. It's not ok for them to say things about me as a white person just as it is not ok for me to say things about them, and yet it never makes sense to them.
I am not trying to cause a big stink here or accuse anyone of anything, I really would like to get some serious feedback on this issue to hopefully clear some things up in my head to hopefully make some progress in dealing with others. Thanks in advance for any constructive posts you may have.
