Racism Question

Hello folks, this is my first post in this forum, I'm usually off talking gear or weights. I had a conversation with a coworker the other day that got me thinking. He is black, I am white. He's a pretty cool guy but could not explain something so I figured I would post it here.

Why is is ok or at least more acceptable for non white people to be racist?

It seems like more and more when I turn the TV or radio on, I hear "whitey, cracker, honky, the man etc, etc" and it's funny and even acceptable. But if a white person makes a comment that even hints or heaven forbid calls a black person black instead of "african american" they are slammed as racist and raked over the coals. Last time I checked an african american would be someone that was born in africa and now lives in the USA or has become a legal citizen of the USA. A person who is black and is born in the USA would be an american right? I have friends of all colors and we are always telling jokes about blacks, whites, mexicans, indians, etc.....they are just jokes and we all know there is nothing to it. Other than the joking they never call me racist names and I of course treat them the same. I am not a racist, don't have racial tendencies and always try and treat others as I would like to be treated but this is never enough. I never call a black person a nigger or a mexican a spick or whatever, but yet I am whitey and it's almost wrong to defend myself. No matter what I do or say or how respectful I treat someone, I am a racist just because I am white. How can the definition of prejudice apply to only white people in some peoples minds? This double standard is just starting to get to me, and honestly, a lot of the white people I know are tired of it as well. How can someone who is non white not see the logic in what I am saying. It's not ok for them to say things about me as a white person just as it is not ok for me to say things about them, and yet it never makes sense to them.

I am not trying to cause a big stink here or accuse anyone of anything, I really would like to get some serious feedback on this issue to hopefully clear some things up in my head to hopefully make some progress in dealing with others. Thanks in advance for any constructive posts you may have.

borski just so you know, this topic has been hashed and rehashed countless times...generally ending negatively with crackas on one side and brothas on the other. so you may not get a lotta responses because of that, just so you know.

the term cracker was derived from the way the white people cracked whips over the black people.. hardly offensive... so when a black person calls me a cracker i simply shoot them

Do a search on all of my posts within the past month...youll see me owning a bunch of people regarding this topic.

Oh, and gracias Gambino.

haha that's fuggin hilarious...I hope it's not real. ;) Hey bro, I totally know what you're getting at w/ your thread topic. I don't know why there has to be so much seperation between people. I.E. the "african" american thing or people feeling the constant need to label people "white" or "black". We're people, that's the way I see it. I think it's just because a lot of people are ingorant, taught ignorance by their parents and they will pass it on to their children. Some people are just afraid that if they stop and take the time to understand people that are a little different than they are, then they will have to label them as "people" and not as "different". But until the day that everyone, no matter what color skin, gets over their hatred, we will live in a black and white world.

It just seems to me to be that way, that Afro-American players can run very, very well. That doesn't mean that Caucasian kids and other descents can't run, but it's very obvious to me that they run extremely well."

Why tell jokes about other ethnicities ?

The fact that you are laughing implies that you are either racist or believe the hype and stereotypes.

and who said it was o.k. or more acceptable for those of color to be racist ?

you say you never call a black person the "N" word....but what is the difference in this and laughing at an ethnic joke ?

I stay away from these threads, but I want to throw something out there...the DeBerry comments made me think of this...

The more the minorities take offense at all of these innocuous comments, I am wondering if it will create a big backlash among the majority - and create an even larger racial divide than we already have.

All this hyper-sensative and politically correct crap may be doing a great deal more damage than any comment by a football coach.

Now this is one of the best and most profound post in this thread....if not on the board.

What an ignorant and dare I say typical post. First off, I like how you wrap me up and deliver me as either a racist or believing the hype. Heaven forbid I am anything else other than what you have already perceived. There is no way I am just a white guy that cannot figure a racial issue out and made a post in hopes of some constructive feedback is there? No, I must be a racist. If you would crack that mind of yours open just a little bit and read the post without coating it with preconceived ideas and prejudices, you might see my goal is to figure this issue out, not just come on here and bash one ethnicity or another. If I wanted to just rip one ethnicity or another I would write “I hate black people” or some other stupid post. I wrote this in hopes of figureing out how to better deal with people of other races and colors and maybe, just maybe get them to see my view on this issue. I have tried to walk in their shoes, so why not return the favor? You bust right out of the gate and call me a racist and yet you are the one that instead of discussing this issue with me or asking questions/debating/sharing/etc, label me. This is a PERFECT example of what I am referring too. I get that kind of prejudiced reply and I am the racist??? PLEASE. For the record, I'm not a racist, never have been, never will be despite what you already have convinced yourself of. I laugh at the human race (and this includes myself more than I care to admit) because we are and continue to be funny on a daily basis. One really has to learn to laugh not only more, but at ones self these days or you will go stir crazy. I don't take myself that seriously.

Who said it was ok for those of color to be racist? Apparently they do or at least that is how it is perceived to me and a growing # of white people, thus my thread in the first place. I wrote what I wrote based on the very concept/theory/perception that those of color on TV and radio, etc are allowed to use racial slurs with absolutely NO negative feedback; the same is not for a white person. Example; Chapelles Show and Mind of Mencia. They are actually pretty funny shows on Comedy Central and one is a mexican guy and one is a black guy. I have watched them numerous times and laughed my head off. They are constantly slamming white people among other races; they laugh at human nature. However, try and replace those hosts with a white guy and just imagine what the press would do with that. RACIST RACIST RACIST. The media, the aclu, The “rev” al sharpton etc would have a field day with that. Why? Double standard. If a white guy says something that relfects a black person in a negative light, he is a racist. If a black person says something that reflects a white person in a negative light he is standing up for himself as he obviously must be presecuted since he is black. If you are being honest with yourself you know that is EXACTLY what would and does happen. Thankfully this is not always the case, but more times than not it is.

Laughing at a joke from a friend is simply that. He doesn't get mad when I tell a joke nor do I when he tells one because we are friends, we treat each other with respect, and we know it is a joke, humor, laughter, the best medicine. We have the ability to laugh and know there is of course a time and a place. Now if he told a "cracker" joke and we all laughed and then I told a black joke and he got pissed off, there you have it; the double standard and that’s what I am talking about in this thread. I have laughed my tail off at some pretty good white jokes. They are funny and stereotypes while usually grossly exaggerated, come from somewhere and I fit a few of them I am sure as do you. They come from human nature and as I said earlier, that’s one of the best sources of comedy on this plant. I'm not here to debate anything other than the mounting evidence that whites are not allowed to stand up for themselves with regard to race based ONLY on the fact that they are white. It seems to be more and more common that non whites have free rein when it comes to racial comments, and that is not pounced on by the media as racism. But change the color of the commentors skin to white and BAMM; instant racist and in walks Jessie Jackson. If you cannot see this, you must live in a small cave somewhere, or have lost the ability to see things logically. Either way I pity you. I would encourage you to start laughing at yourself more as well as each other because Lord knows I am.

This just sounds like a uneducated coach mad after a loss and he is scrambeling to find an excuse.

FYI folks, sorry for the repost of an already hashed out topic. I don't spend as much time in this forum as others. I did a little looking for this topic before posting but didn't follow my own advice and really search before posting. I was simply looking for some constructive feedback to an issue and it got all willy nilly. For those of you that made me laugh or offered some constructive feedback I appreciate it and K to you.
