quote from ironman magazine

this is a quote from the August 2001 issue of Ironman stated supposably as the magazine says by John Hansen, natural olympia.
"I think its better to eat good, healthy bodybuilding food and protein drinks than junk food. I realize that extra calories are going to be stored as fat no matter, where they come from, but it makes more sense to eat foods that will contribute to muscle growth-protein, complex carbs and essential fats-as oppose to those that don't - foods that contain too many simple sugars or are too high in saturated fats."

waht do u guys think of this, i mean i get the muscle growth part, but i mean i was thinking and when ur eating past your maintenace does it really matter where ur calories are coming from?? also as riskybizz was saying on another post just like postworkout i have 75 g dextrose, sugar which is not good for me so would it be just as good to eat something that tastes good and is up there in the glycemic index. do u guys know what i mean?

diamond did u actually read i said i under stand it but u didnt even answer what i asked, but hey it doesnt matter you just got to add another post to ur count! come on man, im not trying to argue but u seem like u know some stuff but dont actually apply it and help ppl here u are alwyas saying just one liners. i think u could be a big help if u would actually put some detail into ur posts.

The way I see it is this:

If you are in a caloric surplus you will gain weight it is simple as that - but the composition of what you eat (clean/crap) is going to decide what kind of weight you put on.

Certainly more excess calories from saturated fats than protein or carbs will be stored as fat. Therefore, it's definitely better to overeat on oatmeal and protein powder than Big Macs.

but isnt the part where he says all extra calories stored as fat wrong? otherwise it wouldnt matter what food u eat.

I'm not sure what that dude was trying to say, but I agree that (other than post workout) you should get you calories from low GI foods. Keeping your blood sugar stable will minimize fat gains and maximize protein synthesis. There is no point to eat "empty" calories except to mkae your taste buds happy.

Not all extra calories you eat are stored as fat. Body composition testing in the obese find that besides havine greater amounts of fatty tissue, obese subjects also have a higher average percenage of lean tissue than their non-obese counterparts.

Apologies for my inability to cite where I read this.

110.... Only time I would take in 75g or 50g dextrose or maltodextrin is w/ my post workout shake. I was referring to weight gainers used throughout the day, IMO they make no sense. If you're willing to eat that much sugar you might as well enjoy it. But post workout I believe the dextrose is much better than eating solid carbs. That's the only time IMO it's ideal.

But like i said... if you're set on drinking sugar... why not enjoy it? Or eat cheerios, or ice-cream, etc. That's ONLY if you're really set on the whole weight gainer thing.

About the article... MS is right. If you want minimal fat gains that's the way to go. But in my case, i think i'm pretty strict when i cut so i have to kick back a little bit when bulking. It's my half way break time. I wont eat crap all day long, but i will eat a double cheeseburger here and there, an ice-cream shake maybe once or twice a week, that sort of thing. I try to eat clean but I'll cheat every now and then and dont' really think it's a big deal.

I do however take in at least the very minimum in protein 1g/pound, and I take in good fats as well.
