Question: Paying Bills Online

Ok; here is my confusion - I can set up online bill pay through my online bank account and most of my bills allow for automatic bill pay...

Which one is best and safest? Setting them up thru my bank or giving them my bank account info.

Setup through your bank so you can control payments.

If you do auto draft and give your bank info to the creditors - they can draw anytime, any amount.

thanks bro; that is what I was guessing - glad to have confirmation.

yeah tru the bank is best.

even where they dont have ACH electronic arrangements with the payee, they'll cut a physical check and mail it

best invention ever.

I feel like I never see my money unless I'm going to a bar. everything else is a little electronic transaction, 1's and 0's run my wealth, fuck

Doing anything automatically except for guaranteed expected/preset amounts (e.g., mortgage, child support) spooks me. Once in a while something happens, you might get a short check or something and it can all go to hell. I don't know about your bank, but I get hit with NSF fees whether I've set it up to pay online or with a paper check if the money ain't there.

I have the online information set up with the bank and my credit cards and once a month I have a quick "bill paying session."

Yeah and what you have to watch with that is that those companies that cut checks for you & have multiple clients have cut 1 check for multiple clients & a lot of companies cannot split the payments between multiple accounts. I've worked many years for CC companies where CheckFree for example would do that & we posted the whole check to 1 person's account when it was meant for 10 so the other 9 customers accounts went delinquent.

I still write checks :(

Me too. I'm old school, but I pay everything I can through my CC automatically every month. Then I have to write just one check or make a phone call or online to pay it. Works pretty good that way and I get cashback from cc company. $500+ so far this year and counting.

I use my cc like cash or a debit card. Of course you pay it at the end of the month, but get the benefits of the cashback and once per month billing. I'm just waiting until they accept mortgage payments with my cc. That would be awesome.

I try to use my CC or debit card as a CC to get points too....I can use the points for whatever - I like the $100 HOme Depot gift cards....hope my utilities can be straightened out soon so I can stop writing checks soon....

$100 gift cards? I liked the double rewards card for each $1 I had, I could use it to purchase $2 worth of stuff from selected stores. But they were Sharper image and places like that. i still used it, so it wasn't too bad.

Personally, I'd like the cashback instead of miles or whatever else they're offering. Cash is king. lol

Is it $ for $ same? Like I said above, if I use a merchant on the list, I could use my cashback for double the amount I actually have. If I had $100 cash value, I could buy a $200 item from these merchants. Now THAT'S a GIFT card.

If it's a card for a specific store, then you're bound to that store. Unless it's Home Depot, i may not shop there often. lol

Did we hijack this thread?

Yep, $ for $ and there are numerous stores on the list - like popular restaurants & stores like Home Depot, Best Buy & Bed Bath & Beyond....got a chest freezer for free from Best Buy 2 years ago and got a BB&Beyond one for stuff for the new house....Cashback is an option on my CC but the debit card is only for certificates & merchandise.

We DID hijack the thread, but it's all good!
