Question for you body builders.

LSE

New member
So I started my new job last week and I started talking to a fellow employee who works out. Well for whatever reason he gets quite jumpy when I mention anything about bodybuilding and why most men go to the extreme. His eyes always turn bug eyed and says "you don't know what your talking about." Everytime at lunchtime I see him taking pills and downing them with some special juice and water. Well last night I said something to him that made him attack me verbally and get right in my face looking like he was about to do something worse to me. Take into account he is only an ameteur body builder, but he is way bigger than me with the exception of height. This is what I said to him that got him angry.

I said at least half of the people who take body building to the extreme like say Greg Valentino, do it because they have low self esteem and depression problems. He again said " you don't know what your talking about and said I'm ignorant for saying such a thing". I then tried to explain myself further thinking he took it the wrong way and thought I was talking about him as well. So I told him again not all body builders just most who take it to the extreme. He kept telling me how ignorant I am and that until I lift something I shouldn't say shit.

I partially agree with that I don't know alot about weight lifting, but I told him I have seen studies and research psychology enough to find out why people do the things they do to the extreme. He just started repeating himself and everytime his face got uglier and uglier, until he just blew up right in my face.

So why did he attack me, what was the reason?

What is extreme anyway. You talk about "at least half . . ." where are you getting your statistics from anyway. "Low self-esteem and depression problems" Bro, this argument can be made for why people overeat. Careful when you generalize. I bodybuild because it keeps me in shape and I look better, especially to the opposite sex. Women go crazy when you have a good body, and when your body is above average or ripped they go ape shit. I feel better and have more energy throughout the day. I am proud to take my shirt off at the pool. I also like the fact that if I need to, I am strong enough to jack someone up if they are fucking with me or my family. Plus, you naturally get more respect when you are in good shape. People look at you differently and I find that I can be a good example for other striving to get into better shape. Your comments to your coworker sounded kind of like jealousy. By painting " at least half " of bodybuilders as only getting into good shape because of personal issues you are sounding very ignorant. Just my opinion.

I didn't say in general all body builders. I told him the ones who go to the extreme and look like monsters.

It would appear from your posting that you are not a body builder. I find it curious that you went to the trouble of registering at EF, selected the Steroid Forum and starting asking leading questions.

Then you even went to the trouble of creating an atypical body building steroid user co-worker in the mist of rage to base your questions on.

I see you are not a Platinum Member so you have no investment in this site at all.

Stuff your thinly vailed, insulting and jealous attitude, and Go Away.
You are on Ignore.

I didn't make him up, I thought you guys can tell me why he blew up in my face. Oh yeah, why do you think I seem jelous? If I said all bodybuilders have low self-esteem than that is a reason why you can say I seem jelous, but I didn't say that. Obviously, your just another hothead and you probably have issues too.

Ok, I will explain myself. I think weight lifting is a great way to keep in shape and become healthy, but when people try to make it into a competition and start looking like monsters is just sad and I feel bad for those kinds of people. It's like those guys always feel small inside and no matter how good they look, they don't see it that way. These guys will have 19+ inch guns and say they need to get bigger!!! I just want to say you don't need to overdue it. I have asked alot of smart damn good looking women what they like muscle wise and they always pick Calvin Cline shaped men over veiny tight swollen looking men. It just doesn't look good when you look like those guys in muscle magazines.

Some people thinks it look good, some don't. Generally most people think it's too extrene, like you, and like me. I don't think it's nice to look at, but it is impressive.
When they say they need those 19" guns to get bigger, that's because they compete! It's an addiction too. Some people does take it to extreme levels, and that's to compete.
Try bodybuilding, and see for yourself what your goals finally will be, and how they will expand. In every sport you want bigger achievements every time.

I tell myself now that I don't ever wanna be weighing over 250lbs+, because I don't wanna be that big, but maybe that'll change in time when I DO get bigger.

Thank you, you understand where I was coming from and knew I wasn't attacking bodybuilding as a whole. Shit, I'm going to start lifting weights on a regular basis sometime soon to get in shape and become healthier. I'm actually not lifting because I'm big boned, but the opposite. I'm a slim man and it seems like it's going to be harder for me to get muscle than it would a fatter guy, who would lose the fat for muscle.

I will just say my way of weight lifting would only be natural. Pretty much eating healthier and lifting. Obviously, I will only get so big, but that is the point. I want whatever my body can naturally achieve. If it's 16" guns then that is fine with me. Little improvement is still improvement. I don't think I'm in shape and I know this and doing the above mentioned will help me succeed in the goals I set for myself.

heh heh, well you seem to be misinformed about some things, but I guess everybody starts somewhere.

I would recommend that instead of trying to push your co-worker's buttons and instigate an ass-kicking, you ask for his advice. I would also urge you to be respectful. (In the real world, the strong don't survive on their debate skills).

See I didn't think that what I said would be an insult to him. I actually thought he would agree with me and add his .2 in, but I guess he defends all bodybuilders even the ones who take it to the extreme. Probably because it takes alot of work to look the way they do and he understands it, because he while not looking like them shares some of the similar experiences that they have also gone through. The sweating, sores, lack of finding the drive etc... I guess I can now see why and I agree somewhat, but instead of him attacking me like he did, I would much rather him have like talked to me like an adult and tell me his opinion on the matter like some of you would.

Beer,wine,cigs,steroids,asprin,caffine pick you posion.
Use a lil feel good use a boatload end up dead.Who cares what others do or why they do it.What ever gets you through the day.

I have a good friend that is in love with jesus and church .Said she had low self estem before she found god.Now faith is the drug of her choice.

Now she gets her 3 cc's dose every sunday and a 2 cc's shot on wensday night to hold her over and make her feel good about herself.

Some people need physical stimulation , some people need mental some even need metaphysical.

Well can you guys give me some lifting advice to start off. I'm 23, 6'3'' tall and my weight is 160lbs. I can't grow hair, because it's in the genes. It's not the same as when older men lose their hair. I'm guessing that is a plus to not have hair, my gf likes it. Hahahah, I don't have to shave. :p

Ok, so you defend those who take it to the extreme too like my co-worker. I play guitar and when someone says their opinion about an accomplished guitarist who could play circles around them, I don't get frustrated and try to defend said guitarist, I just use common sense and see why they think that way. I can understand why someone would think Yngwie Malmsteen sounds like a robot and sometimes he goes to the extremes and sacrifices music for guitar wanking and hear candy. It's an ego problem body builders and guitarist have when they go to the extreme.

Funny I am a guitarist too. I will defend anyone who does what they want to do and lives a happy life without hurting anyone else. Why does it bother you so much. You don't have to look at flex. Do watcha like.

What music do you play?

Some one asked me once why i work out is it low self esteem?
my awnser was something like this.

See your arms and waist see how flabby they are , how fat and out of shape you are.I used to look exactly like you so yes i did have low self esteem looking like you do .I could not see my self living like that way any longer it was just depressing and gross . I decided to lose weight and use the muscle I was born with.Keep them toned lower my body fat and blood pressure.I feel great now and look great now.I would never want to look like I used to or you do now ever again. If i did nothing about it like you do. I would still have low self esteem.

He never asked me anything ever again. He vanished back to the dark side of the work office and hide him self with his doritos and potatoe chips.I still saw him wadle around and he became my motivation as what I never wanted to let my self regress to.

While I dont think your work associates agression is conducive, based on your first post I must agree with him that you are ignorant.

Before you get defense hear me out. The same extreme lifestyle that many bodybuilders persue is the same extreme drive that just about anyone successfull at anything posseses. It just so happens bodybuilders focus on building their bodies but the same excessiveness can be seen in many upperclass people who persue careers and become CEO's, start mega corporations and make millions and to a lesser degree people who veg in front of the computer every waking moment when they are not working posting on forums.

Just about anyone can sit back and question, demean or even pity the lives of people they dont understand but its that lack of understanding which is the very definition of ignorance.

Why would you feel bad for someone that has picked a lifestyle and followied it? No one is holding a gun to their head. I certainly admit that some people can and do overdue it but the same can be said for workaholics or even the other extreme where people sacrifice their health for their families. Keep in mind in not saying any of these are bad but they can be viewed as bad by those who dont have the drive and ambition of those who truely accell at what they do. Also remember the guys in the magazines with pro cards can make a decent living so while the average joe goes off to work in his stuffy cube all day the bodybuilder goes to a gym. Its not always about looks, sure it may start that way but it can also turn into a living, a goal, a test of ones own fortitude and drive.

There are many things at work here that your clearly dont understand in the bodybuilding sense or any sense for that matter. Im not trying to insult you either, its a simple fact of life that some people just dont settle for the status quo. For some its making money, for some its climbing mount everest or going to the moon. Just because someone does somethings, anything, to the extreme doesnt mean they are sick and should be pittied. It also doesnt mean its about lack of self esteme. Its about whats inisde, its about doing what makes you feel good and often times doing it has nothing to do with how the world percieves your actions.

Live and let live. I suggest you worry about yourself and quit feeling sorry for people you know nothing about. Look at it this way, many of the worlds most significant inventions and great breakthroughs were made by people who would be considered extreme by the average joe.

If everyone walked around seeking pure balance and didnt persue passions for what ever the reason we would probably still be in the dark ages.

The simple fact is that you can say what does extreme mean... almost everything has an extreme. Just because you dont agree with it doesnt make them have 'low self esteem and depression problems'. You could say tattoo artist are extreme or runners waking up 4 o'clock every morning to be the best in their sport are extreme. but without the extremes you wouldnt have the 'best'. bodybuilding is just like anyother sport there are people trying to be their best or the best of the best.

and you talked about greg Valentino...I dont believe he was trying to be the best in bodybuilding because bodybuilding requires proportion and symmetry neither of which greg has. Greg was just trying to look like a freak and get attention by injecting massive synthol dosages and getting implants. So one of the reasons why this guy got mad is because Greg is no bodybuilder and to compair him to a bodybuilder is like compairing michael jackson to a face model. also keep this in mind...no one and i mean no one likes to be psychoanalyzed....it makes you seem like a smart ass when you do this, exspecily when neither bodybuilding nor psychology is your field

First off you make ignorant statements. And you really don't know what you are talking about. Why should we know why your co-worker got mad at you? Probably because you annoy him about things that he enjoys. What do you want us to tell you he is on steroids and had roid rage? Is that why you said he takes funny pills and drinks strange stuff? What are you 12 years old.

Getting to your comment about people never being big enough. For some this is a self-confidence issue but for many others it is a drive for them. Do you have ambition in life? For some people they like to see how big they can get, and that is their ambition. Is that a bad thing?

Personally I consider myself well above average intelligence, good looking and an enjoyable person when I want to be. I have no self-confidence issues, but I like the look of professional bodybuilders where as some people don't. If I want to look like a professional bodybulider, does this mean I have self-confidence issues. I would hope not, seeing as this is just a look that appeals to me and is something that I would like to achieve.

Before you respond you should think about what you say. I have not read this entire post, as I stopped when I read what I quoted you as saying. The point of having you think before you speak, is because you may be offending others because of your lack of intelligence about the issue.

Why would you keep asking questions and bringing up the issue to your co-worker if he obviously didn't want to talk about (I.E. "you don't know what you're talking about")?

i try and tell people all the time, i dont care about what they think of me going to the gym, eating my meals, and getting better. this is about something they cant understand. awesome post.

ps: to the poster,
besides being alive have you dedicated 18 years of your life to one thing, anything but it takes time and care to do it. i'm not talking about breathing. thats how long ive been working out. by your standards i must be one the bottom of the self esteem ladder.

Yessir! 180 becomes 200 becomes 220 becomes 240 and so on and so on...it's all about breaking plateau and testing our limits...I'm personally proud of myself that I don't look in the mirror and say "I'm 230lbs and girls like my body, I'm done bb'ing"

i call bullshit on this whole thread.

why would someone find and register a gear board to ask a little bitch question like 'why does my coworker want to beat me up'

if this is not a joke you are a little bitch

I wouldn't say it's a joke...more like 20/20 or Dateline or something.

To the thread started, can you say on tv: "DiamondCutCows say hi"?? Thanks. LOL

Dude, its obvious why he blew up...you probably hit the nail on the head and described exactly how he is -or- he felt like you were attacking anybody who lifts weights or bodybuilds for a hobby....thereby attacking him.

Well, I gotta say that I consider myself a Bodybuilder, but I'm in no way EXTREEME..... I'm bigger then the average American male, but that's not too hard with the FAT ASSES in our society anymore..... Anyway, my take on the subject is you have a good point, but he didn't like what you said..... Now why is the question??? He might not like you for other reasons.... He might have something against you, or maybe you did something to the guy, and he would just rather not talk to ya? I don't know.... Just making guesses.....

For the record, becoming a PRO ANYTHING (football, baseball, basketball, even Golf player) requires an extreeme individual.... Bodybuilding is no different at all..... Most Pro's don't have anything to prove, they just see that they have AMAZING GENETICS, and can Excel in the sport.....

I'm a musican too, play bass/guitar in a band.... I have since I was 21yrs old, and being in Great shape just gets me that much more pussy when I'm on stage.... That's been my biggest inspiration to be in shape, and it's paid off I gotta say..... Also, some guys are Hot Heads, and if you say what you said, they are gonna get pissed.... Be carefull man, don't piss the guy off is my advice.....

rizz

A lot of the agressive responses to this person's post are the reasons this guy feels this way.
I have met and spoke to (including on this site) many guys who build, take roids etc and they have EXTREMELY low self esteem. Do they build b/c they have it, not sure, but it's a vise. And the vise of building is much healthier and better than drugs or booze.
Working out does build self esteem and beats anxiety and depression.....it did for me and still does! Exercise (in any form) helps with these issues.

The guy you work with should have answered you in a mature manner and not just "shut up dude" Like some NIM RODS on this thread did.
Most of the intelligent answers you got on this thread are bang on and I think were the answers you may have been looking for.

I agree with prizz, whether you meant to piss the guy off or not, you need to be able to see when to stop pushing the guy's buttons. He doesn't have to talk to you, he just has to work with you.
