Question about low-carb diets..

Okay.. what exactly is the reason for cutting out carbs when cutting? Is it so your body will utilize fat for energy instead, or because of insulin release? I'm confused on what the actual reasoning is.

Thanks for your help,

Aaron

I think that when insulin levels are low during a reduction of calories then more muscle will be preserved--less muscle will be used a fuel source.

A reduction of carbs usually yields lower insulin levels. Low GI carbs can also yield lower insulin levels. If you restrict yourself to eating Low GI carbs(excluding your post workout meal), which are usually relatively low in calories, then you will almost inevitably be eating "low carbs." A modest fat intake (around 30% from calories) may also have it's benefits, but I'm not sure if this is the case...maybe by increasing utilization of fat for fuel. I'm sure others will come through will a better explanation, as I have forgotten how this works.

Others will give better reasoning, but the main reason I eat around 25-30% calories from carbs and 30-35% cals from fat is because I have read that it may preserve more muscle than calorie ratio's higher in carbs and lower in fat.

Hmm...

Okay, that was my theory as well. It's way too difficult for me to go on a no-carb diet, so what I'm doing is sticking to those that have a low GI rating, except for post workout. I'm keeping them as low as I can though.

Aaron...

a couple of things....

first when you reduce carbs to a point where you have no sugar in the body your body quickly turns to fat for energy... the body burns fat 10 times faster than it burns carbs... so here is the problem... lets say that you eat a bagel for breakfast.... it takes so long to burn off that bagel (hours) that when you eat lunch and intake fat... that fat will get stored rather than burned because your body is still busy with that bagel. People on low carb diets eat high amounts of fat because the steady intake of fat keeps the body burning fat...

as for insulin spikes... carbs do cause them... when insulin is spiked it makes it almost impossible for the body to burn fat... so the combination of carbs and the insulin spike really are not ideal for burning fat as you can see.

Hope this helps... low carb may be difficult to follow... but it can ber VERY VERY effective

Well, i'm not sure about other diets, but Atkins is all about controlling insulin release. The goal is to restrict carbs and keep fat slightly higher than protein (protein ha a glycogen effect). What your essentially doing is putting your body into Ketosis, which simply means that your body is burning fat for energy, not carbohydrates. The way i always think of it is that it takes fat to burn fat.

Its not the most effective for lifting weights, but for people who are severly obese or diabetic, a low carb diet along with cardio and some weights works great. I prefer a low carb diet to a low fat simply for the food selections. The only thing i really miss is pizza and Captain Crunch ;)

And don't let anyone tell you you'll eat yourself into a heart attack. I went to the doctor about 3 weeks ago (i've been on Atkins since June) and his jaw dropped as he said, "Your Cholestorol is suprisingly good. Especially for your weight (203lbs)"

I've still got 20-30 lbs to go, but heck, its so painless big whoop :)

Both. Yeah - I can't do ketogenic diets - messes with me too much. So I do a low carb thing along the lines of 40-30-30 (carbs to protein to fat ratio).

Thanks for the help, guys. Another question... oatmeal is still okay to have in the morning during a cut, right?
