QUestion about credit car theft?????

Ok..so awhile back my moms credit card was somehow copied and used, they said most likely from a gas station, they have a machine that copies the strip on the back i believe. anyway..the person charged like 2k, my mom called the company, got her money credited back to her account ....now my question is whats to stop someone from charging a bunch of shit one day and saying their card was stolen and it wasnt them who purchased the items?....the credit card company didnt seem to ask many questions and just gave her the money back.

They go by the amount of times and they do some checking up on who charged the account and where.

The CC companies collaborate with the police and investigate the matter. The police will use surveillance tapes at the stores to view who used the cards. I just went through that when my wallet was stolen from my house.

how much money was involved....i doubt they did any further investigation in my mom's case...they only told her the stores where the shit was bought. they probably have thousands of cases like this every day...your case is a break in which involves the town police....a lost credit card is a little different...they are not going to send out police for every card that gets lost and used.

The CC bills were under 1k, but the whole break-in was over 10-15k...

They also look at your purchase history & compare signatures. If you mom has a certain shopping pattern and all of sudden there are purchases for video games and odd things, then they will figure out it wasn't her. Or, if she only charges $100 a month and then there are 1000s of dollars in purchases at once, they will question it.

When I moved out of my parents' house and was purchasing a lot of things for my new place. They put a hold on my card while I was shopping because there were so many purchases in a short amount of time. I had to call them from the cash register to unlock my card.

I would never do it ..im not stupid. but if i wanted to do it and get away with it , it would be easy.

1. sign some shit signature.
2. buy everything within 1 hour at a location 2 hours away, this makes it look like suspicious purchases.
3. have a friend make the actual purchases for you, just so your not on camera (just in case, even though i dout they investigate each case).


it is stupid however...its obviously something you could do only 1x and is it really worth it....hell no.
