Question about bandwidth

I don't know about bandwidth and all that stuff that goes along with internet sites, but doesn't it take up more bandwidth to have all these different boards?

Bandwidth is the amount of data you can push through your internet connection. A T1 has more bandwidth than a 28.8k modem. So if this was hosted on a T1 server, you would never have any problems, unless there was an uplink problem or any other kind of udp/tcp flooding, whatever.

This is what's taking up space in your brain today? Go find El Cubano and provide some real entertainment.
There is only so much space up there.

No he just calls me stupid and thinks I am racist.

No I was just wondering since I read and posted on the why was blah blah blah post moved about music, then I went over to the music board and the first page of posts go all the way back to June 1 or something like that.

Ok for some reason I was thinking that it cost more for a certain amount of bandwidth.

If you buy/rent a host, then they can limit your bandwith, ie. the type of connection you get, and quota on the amount of space you can have.

OK for all those computer geeks out there.

A T1 is equal to a maximum transfer rate of 1.54 megabits per second.

A T3 is equal to a maximum transfer rate of 45 megabits per second.

There also much larger pipes like DS3's and OC3's.

A T1 would cost on average about 1K a month, a T3 a little more than twice that (I think). As you use or buy more bandwidth is will cost you more. Though you do gain economies of scale as you get larger.

I would think that this site is hosted on a T3 or larger, but that is only an assumption. The number of boards isn't really the factor it's the number of posts on the entire board. Posts with pictures generally take up more than 10 to 50 times as much bandwidth.

A DS3 is a T3. You're in Western NY so I forgive you. Are you on the "Southern Tier"?

Ah, Matt you are correct. I get confused sometimes. The whole Digital/Analog thing I forgot about. An OC3 is equal to 155, and OC12 is equal to 655 or "Super Fast" as I like to call it.

By the way I'm not in the "Southern Tier", I'm up in Rochester. Only slightly better. :D
