Quad injections.

Why do we inject in the outer most quad muscle instead of the rectus (sp?) femoris? The rectus I thought was a bigger muscle, wouldn't it take the injection better?

There are pics on here to help you get the right spot.

I understand where to inject in my quad, I was just curious why the rectus femoris isn't used.

I have only used my quads and I sometime rotate the needle medially so I am fairly sure that I am hitting my rectus femoris and I have never had an issue with veins. I did hit a nerve once however.

The rectus femoris is not the biggest quad muscle. The outer muscle (vastus lateralis) is actually the biggest. You can inject in the rectus femoris, I alternate between the two, but you should take a look at an anatomy book so you dont hit something you shouldnt. I even used to inject in the medial quad muscle, but there are a lot more nerves and veins to deal with there. I wouldn't recommend it. Technically, you can inject into any muscle in the body. Some muscles are better suited for injections than others.

Now that im using 25 ga 5/8" I've hit all 4 muscles in my quads with no problems. Gets hard to find a spot in between surface veins but I guess that's a quality problem.

What's the 4th muscle you're hitting in your quad out of curiosity? Cause the main 3 muscles are quite out in the open, but the 4th is actually under the rectus femoris and practically wraps around the femur. Unless you're injecting in the sartorius muscle??... which I'd really like to know how you would pull that one off. That'd take some balls to try and inject there.

You can hit the rectus femoris which is in the middle and is what extends your leg below the knee outward. I would just be careful getting any closer inward than that because then you risk hitting your sciatic nerve, not to mention your femoral artery and vein among others.

I dunno, I always thought it was the Sartorius but if not, my bad. The other 3 I'm guessing are Vastus medialis,Rectus femoris and the Vastus lateralis. But if there is another one let me know. I'll try and hit it for your entertainment. :-)

Ya anatomy was the only class I really paid attention in, I still remember almost all of it.

Thanks for all the information. K for the help.
