STUDY DESIGN
Fifty-three healthy individuals, with an average age of 36 years, were recruited into the study, 25 females and 28 males. Each of the participants were approximately 10-15lbs over-fat as determined by the Body Mass Index (or BMI). BMI is a commonly used method to estimate a person's body fat level and is determined by dividing a person's weight (in kg) by their height (in meters) squared to give a value of kg/m. In order to be part of the study each person had to have a BMI value of 25 or greater, which in the general population is associated with having about 10-15 extra lbs. of body fat. Once the participants were officially involved in the study, a more accurate measurement of body fat and lean body mass was then determined by means of Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA). Each participant then met with a dietitian and an exercise physiologist who instructed them to follow a specific 2000-calorie a day diet as well as a defined five-day a week exercise program. The participants were then randomly placed into three different groups: a control group, a placebo group and the Pyruvate group. All three groups followed the exact same diet and exercise program for the six weeks, the placebo group received 10 capsules a day of a placebo (or inactive substance). The placebo was maltodextrin, a complex carbohydrate that provides approximately the same amount of calories as the Pyruvate product. The control group did not receive any capsules, while the Pyruvate group received 10 capsules of Pyruvate, providing only 6grams of Pyruvate daily. Neither the participants in the study nor the researchers themselves knew who was getting which capsules. This type of study design known as a "double-blinded, placebo controlled" study is the quality standard since it removes both the participant's and the researcher's ability to bias the results of the study. After six weeks of rigorous testing, the results were surprising.

Loss in body fat, 3.4 lbs. Increase in lean body mass, 18% increase in energy levels, and 71% decrease in fatigue levels.
RESULTS
Interestingly, no significant change in bodyweight was found in any of the three groups including the Pyruvate group. However, despite no discernable change in bodyweight, there was a significant change in body composition. The researchers found that the participants who ingested Pyruvate lost 4.8 lbs. of body fat during the six-week study, which translates into a weekly body fat loss of .8 lbs., or a loss equivalent to 12.4% of their original amount of body fat. This loss of 4.8 lbs. was quite a contrast to the .1 lb. gain in body fat found in the control group and the .2 lb. loss observed in the placebo group. Furthermore, this 4.8-lb. loss in body fat in six weeks becomes even more significant when you consider that the study participants were ingesting 2000 calories a day, and not the 500 or a 1000 calories used in some of the previous pyruvate human studies. The loss of 4.8 lbs. of body fat as a result of ingesting Pyruvate for six weeks is, therefore, quite remarkable. The reason their body weight did not change despite a significant decrease in their body fat is because the pyruvate group also gained 3.4 lbs. of lean body mass. This increase of 3.4 lbs. in lean body mass eclipse the small gain of .4 lbs. in the control group and the small loss of .3 lbs. in the placebo group. Even though their weight did not change significantly, the participants in the pyruvate group had actually gained over a half a pound of lean body mass each week. It is also important to add that the study participants did not engage in heavy-duty weight training either. Rather, this increase in lean body mass was achieved with just a 30-minute combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, performed five days a week. It should also be noted that all of the participants went through the same exact workouts.
One method of summarizing changes in body composition, such as decreases in body fat and increases in lean body mass, is by a formula known as the Body Composition Improvement (or BCI). The formula is rather simple. For every pound of body fat, a person is given a value of +1 (if they lose a pound) and a value of-1 (if they gain a pound). Therefore, if a person loses 4.8 lbs. of body fat, he or she is given a value of +4.8. This +4.8 is then added to the amount of lean body mass a person gains (or loses). If we were to add the 3.4 lbs. of lean body mass gained over the 6 weeks by the Pyruvate group, their BCI score would be of 8.2 lbs. (4.8 lb. (decrease in body fat) + 3.4 lb. (increase in lean body mass) = +8.2 lbs.). In contrast, the average BCI for the control group was +0.3 lbs. and -0.1 lb. for the placebo group. A BCI score of +8.2 lbs. simply means that the participants ingesting the Pyruvate were actually seeing a 1.4 lb. positive change in their body composition each and every week of the 6 weeks they were taking the product.
The BCI is a good indicator of what happens when a person is trying to lose weight because it considers the effect of body fat loss or gain and not only body weight loss/gain. In fact, the faster a person loses "weight" the greater the tendency he or she will lose muscle in addition body fat. For example, let's say a person loses 10 lbs. quite rapidly, at best 5 of those 10 lbs. will bc fat. The other 5 lbs. will be water and muscle weight. Consequently, a person's BCI would be 0 (5+-5--0); a situation no one should strive towards if they want to permanently solve their over-fat condition.
Although most people are now beginning to realize that the real enemy is body fat and not just "weight", many people still have a difficult time getting over "what the scale says." The results of this study are a perfect example of how a person's body composition can change dramatically without experiencing any significant change in bodyweight. The goal, therefore, should be to reduce body fat while maintaining or even increasing lean body mass.

Once the participants were officially involved in the study, a more accurate measurement of body fat and lean body mass was then determined by means of Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA). Each participant then met with a dietitian and an exercise physiologist who instructed them to follow a specific 2000-calorie a day diet as well as a defined five-day a week exercise program. The participants were then randomly placed into three different groups: a control group, a placebo group and the Pyruvate group. All three groups followed the exact same diet and exercise program for the six weeks, the placebo group received 10 capsules a day of a placebo (or inactive substance). The placebo was maltodextrin, a complex carbohydrate that provides approximately the same amount of calories as the Pyruvate product. The control group did not receive any capsules, while the Pyruvate group received 10 capsules of Pyruvate, providing only 6grams of Pyruvate daily. Neither the participants in the study nor the researchers themselves knew who was getting which capsules. This type of study design known as a "double-blinded, placebo controlled" study is the quality standard since it removes both the participant's and the researcher's ability to bias the results of the study. After six weeks of rigorous testing, the results were surprising.

RESULTS OF PYRUVATE ON FATIGUE AND ENERGY LEVELS
The beneficial effects of reducing body fat and increasing lean body mass were not the only positive effects witnessed as a result of ingesting Pyruvate. The Pyruvate group also experienced an 18% increase in vigor/energy levels, which when compared to the increases of only 1.8% and 4.5% found in the control and placebo groups, respectively were significantly higher. CONCLUSION
The results of this double-blinded, placebo-controlled study clearly demonstrate that in individuals who are approximately 10-15 lbs. over-fat, the ingestion of 6 grams of Pyruvate, daily, for six weeks resulted in the following: 4.8 lbs. Loss in body fat, 3.4 lbs. Increase in lean body mass, 18% increase in energy levels, and 71% decrease in fatigue levels.
RESULTS
Interestingly, no significant change in bodyweight was found in any of the three groups including the Pyruvate group. However, despite no discernable change in bodyweight, there was a significant change in body composition. The researchers found that the participants who ingested Pyruvate lost 4.8 lbs. of body fat during the six-week study, which translates into a weekly body fat loss of .8 lbs., or a loss equivalent to 12.4% of their original amount of body fat. This loss of 4.8 lbs. was quite a contrast to the .1 lb. gain in body fat found in the control group and the .2 lb. loss observed in the placebo group. Furthermore, this 4.8-lb. loss in body fat in six weeks becomes even more significant when you consider that the study participants were ingesting 2000 calories a day, and not the 500 or a 1000 calories used in some of the previous pyruvate human studies. The loss of 4.8 lbs. of body fat as a result of ingesting Pyruvate for six weeks is, therefore, quite remarkable. The reason their body weight did not change despite a significant decrease in their body fat is because the pyruvate group also gained 3.4 lbs. of lean body mass. This increase of 3.4 lbs. in lean body mass eclipse the small gain of .4 lbs. in the control group and the small loss of .3 lbs. in the placebo group. Even though their weight did not change significantly, the participants in the pyruvate group had actually gained over a half a pound of lean body mass each week. It is also important to add that the study participants did not engage in heavy-duty weight training either. Rather, this increase in lean body mass was achieved with just a 30-minute combination of aerobic and anaerobic exercise, performed five days a week. It should also be noted that all of the participants went through the same exact workouts.
One method of summarizing changes in body composition, such as decreases in body fat and increases in lean body mass, is by a formula known as the Body Composition Improvement (or BCI). The formula is rather simple. For every pound of body fat, a person is given a value of +1 (if they lose a pound) and a value of-1 (if they gain a pound). Therefore, if a person loses 4.8 lbs. of body fat, he or she is given a value of +4.8. This +4.8 is then added to the amount of lean body mass a person gains (or loses). If we were to add the 3.4 lbs. of lean body mass gained over the 6 weeks by the Pyruvate group, their BCI score would be of 8.2 lbs. (4.8 lb. (decrease in body fat) + 3.4 lb. (increase in lean body mass) = +8.2 lbs.). In contrast, the average BCI for the control group was +0.3 lbs. and -0.1 lb. for the placebo group. A BCI score of +8.2 lbs. simply means that the participants ingesting the Pyruvate were actually seeing a 1.4 lb. positive change in their body composition each and every week of the 6 weeks they were taking the product.
The BCI is a good indicator of what happens when a person is trying to lose weight because it considers the effect of body fat loss or gain and not only body weight loss/gain. In fact, the faster a person loses "weight" the greater the tendency he or she will lose muscle in addition body fat. For example, let's say a person loses 10 lbs. quite rapidly, at best 5 of those 10 lbs. will bc fat. The other 5 lbs. will be water and muscle weight. Consequently, a person's BCI would be 0 (5+-5--0); a situation no one should strive towards if they want to permanently solve their over-fat condition.
Although most people are now beginning to realize that the real enemy is body fat and not just "weight", many people still have a difficult time getting over "what the scale says." The results of this study are a perfect example of how a person's body composition can change dramatically without experiencing any significant change in bodyweight. The goal, therefore, should be to reduce body fat while maintaining or even increasing lean body mass.
It's no secret that we look and feel our best when we lose the fat and increase muscle mass, which is the primary reason why most people lift weights and exercise - to look better. However, it is important to note that since muscle is metabolically active (uses energy), losing muscle is actually counter productive to losing body fat. On the other hand, increasing lean body mass it stands to increase a person's metabolic rate, which makes it easier to achieve the look you're striving for.
