Protein after running???

Yes after any physical activity it is good to take in some protein to help refuel the muscles. The window is 1 hr after physical excercise.

Since running is an aerobic exercise, it is more important to consume a complex carbohydrate source shortly after exercising to re-establish blood glucose levels and glycogen reserves. If the aerobic activity is prolonged, then a source of carbohydrates can be consumed during the activity. A source of protein can also be consumed afterwards but it is not a priority as long as you are meeting your daily requirements. Anaerobic exercise, such as weight training, does require that you consume a high quality source of protein immediately after exercising in addition to a source of carbohydrates shortly thereafter. Proper hydration is also important for both.

Although protein has an energy value, it should not be considered a source of energy for your body as this would mean that glycogen and fat reserves are not sufficient. The primary function of protein is in the repair and development of muscle tisue.

A beginning runner still has to develop the muscle needed to run effeciently. When I just started I always had sore muscles after a run. So I guess it depends. If your legs are already up to the task there's little point in taking protein, complex carbs are more needed in that case.

it def is important to get some simple sugars some more complex ones and some protein but damn i could not have one right after i got doen running 4 miles. i would drink a water gatorade combo and then maybe try and nibble on a protein bar, but for the first 30 minutes after i got done with a hard run, i couldnt eat a shake or id throw up
