Proper "Karma" etiquette?

While adding an avatar for myself I discovered all these people who have sent me good karma over the course of time. I think it's cool of everyone who's given me some, and it's also kind of a way of saying "Hi, I acknowledge your existance and like what you have to say!". Is it typical to message someone back and say "Hey thanks! How ya doin'?", or has pretty much everything been said in the message that accompanies it?

When you send someone karma with a message do you kind of hope that they will message you back privately, and open the lines of communication somewhat?
