problems with hitting the heavy bag.

Whenever i hit the bag by the end of my workout my knuckles are always all cut up and then i need to wait a couple weeks for them to heal before i can hit again. I use gloves but i dont use handwraps could this be why?

It's common. Your skin toughen ups if you keep hitting the bag. Just don't wait 2 weeks to let them heal. If you're really up to it practice hitting the very bottom of the bag where its the hardest. When you move up to the middle of the bag it feels a lot easier.

Ya i have mine in the basement to so ur saying just hit it anyway and the skin will get used to it eventually? Im just scared its gonna tear all the skin off and ill see my knuckle that wont happen? Sorry if that was a unbelievably stupid question.

Well, DUH!!! You need to wrap your hands for wrist support, and so you don't eff-up your knuckles. Don't try to be a big bad tough guy. Pro boxers pad AND wrap. Especially if you're hitting the bag hard.

I aint tryin to be a "big tough guy" i just couldnt afford the wraps when i bought the bag/gloves and never got around to it.

Your skin will defintatly harden. In the underground bare knuckle boxing leagues in london around 1870 the winner was baisically determined by how hard his skin was around his knuckles. there were stories of guys who would just go out and punch TREES all day long to toughen up their knuckles. as with everything else, you body will adapt to any regular stress, it's a wonderful thing!!!

Agreed. You'll probably get a different answer from everyone who boxes whether or not to use hand wraps when hitting the bag. Most people find hand wraps cause a more direct impact on the knuckles and therefore avoid them. Just don't try to go all out and destroy the bag when you hit it. Common mistake for beginners that leads to injury. Your punch should connect right before your arm makes full extention and should push through the bag only a few inches.

Exactly: I was using the heavy bag for several months to get bigger/cut up. Lets say i loved it and it def started me on my bulking diet.

The most important thing to do is make sure your form is correct. W/O Propper form you can seriously get hurt hitting a bag. Make sure to step into the punch and listen to alex, you should hit the back before you arm is fully extented.

About the handwraps; Thats all i use, no gloves. Even with the handwraps my fingers/knuckes get destroyed. But after the first month all the pain went away. And the skin tougens up, so lets say u split you knucke(s) next month it shouldnt happen again.

My biggest problem is i hit very hard. I have a 100lb bag and i move it around, so my knuckes are sore, mostly my pinky. Oh and i have constant bruises inbetween my knuckes too.

NO PAIN NO GAIN.

BUT make sure FORM is 100% no wild punches.
