Premium Gas

With all the ado lately about high gas prices, I was reading an article the other day about regular unleaded vs premium unleaded.

It said something about vehicles manufactured in the last five or ten years don't really benefit from premium gas.

What grade are you all buying these days? Are the higher prices changing you usage at all?

I never buy anything other than 87. I just don't trust that there's a difference in octanes.

Oh yeah, good to see you around here Gymtime.

87 in the Envoy but always 93 in the 93 mustang. With the 5.0, if we use anything less, you can literally feel and hear the performance difference. Engine starts knocking

nope. i have a 99 ranger and with 87 the engine pings. I went online and saw several other ranger owners who had late 90 models say they got the same problem and that higher octane gas took care of it. when i started using 93 octane the problem went away.

so go from gay to more gayer in other words?

I always see one truck filling up all the pumps. Think about it. I'm just using 87. I think it's a big scam and it's all the same shit. Seriously. But even if it's not I've always heard for long time (back when I was in HS taking auto shop) that only high performance cars show are difference when using 93. I'm talking Corvettes, Vipers and the like.

the car companies are making a killing. all you've got to do is stamp "premium only" on your manuel and collect a big ole check from the gas companies.

think about it, if these newer vehicles are supposedly better they should be able to run on lower octane, and the older ones should require 93. not the other way around.

scam.

My car I put whatever the cheapest I can find. If I drop below 89 with my Harley there is a noticeable difference right away. I always try to put the highest grade in it also from a higher use gas station to lower risk of old gas.

Cheers,
Scotsman

Yeah I've heard from numerous sources only pretty exotic high performance cars benefit/need high octane Gas. (Ferrari, Lambourghini, etc.). Anything else you are just being stupid. Stupidface.

it's not a scam, there is a difference between the octanes. my old blazer i only run 87 octane in. i've put higher rated fuel in before but didn't really notice much difference. it's a gas pig anyway, and higher octane might get one more mpg, that's about it.

her 96 Civic, however, we always run 89 octane in. you can feel a slight power difference between the grades of fuel. if you run 87 in that car, you get the nasty rotten egg smell (no, it's not a bad catalytic converter, that's a myth). 89 octane and no nasty smells. if i run 93 in her car, i'll squeeze out another 3 maybe even 4 mpg.

cars with fuel injection don't need high octane gas. the injection helps to break up the fuel better when it's sprayed, more air gets mixed with it, therefore it burns better. all new cars are fuel injected anyway. fill that puppy with 87 and see how it runs. if there's no pinging and it's smooth, leave it as is. you might lose 1mpg. big deal. higher performance cars benifit more from higher octane fuels, however, you're going to demand the performance out of it so you'll want the highest octane you can get.

older carbbed cars (and motorcycles) need the higher octanes. my 99F4 is carbbed and i won't run anything LESS than 93 octane in it. i'll get 94 if it's at the pump. i've run it on el cheapo gas before and it turns into a slug. feels like each carb is choking on a rat. i demand performance out of the bike at all times, but even on fast backroad rides i'll still pull over 30mpg..can get over 40 if i'm highway crusing all day :)

Thats my point. They do not need it, yet the car company is printing
"premium fuel only" on it. Who is benefitting from this? The Gas companies.

and theoretically, if 87 was so much worse than 93-94 then it would be in the car companies best interest to not stamp premium only because that would shorten the car life, and lead to more repairs, and more money for the dealer if you service there. Its a stretch to believe all that, but cars are made a lot crappier today than they were even in the early to mid 90's.

the fuel grade your car needs in order to run smoothly is dependant on the car really. as i said, my girlfriend's civic needs 89 octane. my blazer can survive on 87.

the reason the car manfacturers are saying to use higher octane is also due to the fact that newer cars are going to feel a bit more "peppier" with a higher octane, therefore making you feel even happier about your purchase that you've got a strong engine under the hood. but if the car can survive just fine on the low octane, it shouldn't be hurting anything.
