If I am doing x every day and others around me perceive that I am just doing x. Yet I see it that I am either making progress towards a goal by doing x everyday if I see it as contributing to that goal through a frame work of common measures that form my perception in a positve manner. If I see it as not contributing to that frame work of common measures then I change my perception and say I'm in a rut. I'm still doing the same thing yet my perception of it varies based on intention.
