Pre-emptive strike on NK?

North Korea would go down quick, but they'd do alot of damage before they did. That is the problem, the NK situation is like a hostage taker situation. He has no leverage other than his ability to destroy life and infrastructure so the police are unwilling to move on him.
NK tested a 1 megaton bomb, which is pretty small. I think there were 1 megaton conventional bombs in WW2. NK doesn't have the tools to build a missile that could hit us w/o crashing into the ocean, let alone a nuclear warhead to put on the missile.
I have no idea what the solution is, but a pre-emptive military strike is unlikely unless we can get China involved. An internal coup would be better.

A 1 megaton bomb is quite large and is a hydrogen bomb (fusion) whereas the one they supposedly tested is about 5-10 kilotons. We had nothing in WWII that remotely came close to 1 megaton as a conventional bomb. As an idea the largest conventional weapon in history is the MOAB and it is equal to 20 kilotons the same as the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs, fat man and little boy.
Korea has the technology and the capability, whether or not their programs are far enough along is another question. I would hate for us to wait and find southern CA uninhabitible for several hundred years.

Even with them threatening (they always threaten), their missile technology currently isn't good enough to build a working transpacific missile. Even if they could, it takes several days to fuel those things and they could be destroyed on the launchpad.
The real worry is and always has been their artillery pieces aimed at Seoul. Also their 200k strong special forces unit willing to do overseas mission could be a problem. The 0.5 kiloton nuclear weapon is more for show.

That makes sense. I am not sure if they actually did detonate succesfully, the next few days will tell.
At the moment I am not worried about them launching so much as invading the south and hand carrying a nuclear device. We have a lot of US personel over there and they could conventionally drop it near our Navy which would also cause a great deal of chaos.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The United States believes North Korea attempted to detonate a nuclear device and that "something went wrong," a U.S. government official told CNN Tuesday.
The official confirmed North Korea informed the Chinese government prior to the test that it would be a 4 kiloton nuclear device.
The official added that the unexpectedly small blast, of a half kiloton or less, indicated "something went wrong."
Nuclear tests in 1998 by India and Pakistan were about 24 to 50 times as powerful - or in the 15 kiloton range, according to the Federation of American Scientists.

All countries should stop giving them aid within a week if they want to crush North Korea, or tighten the Reigns. Sanction, SANCTION, SANCTION! Embarigo, do everything. Their people are already starving, all food aid stops, all fuel aid stops. Starve them to death, but since they are already there, freeze them to death in Winter. Also, no Medical Assistance at all, if we give any or anyone does, all Medical Aid is automatically stopped with everything else. The only thing that should be moving in and out of their Ports is their own War Ships and NOTHING traveling into their country over land.
Besides, North Korea wants a war. North Korea is an Economic Slum, South Korea is quite better off then North Korea I'm assuming. My guess is Kim is hoping China won't touch them with Military while he does a Land Grab on South Korea. I'm sure he has enough to fortify enough area's of South Korea if he moves quick enough to make it hard to take back the land tooken. I bet big bucks Kim wants a reason to do a land grab.

So a heavy monitoring, plus a blockade will still get them supplies through back deals? If we can get China to sign on, Russia has no way of giving them supplies due ot a blockade because they'd have to send convoy's through China.

I don't think that they will carry out their threats against the US. They would do a minor bit of damage if they even have the capability of getting a warhead over here without us blowing it up before it was launched. In return, they know that we would decimate their country. I don't foresee even their idiot dictator self-destructing that badly.
