Recently I have been having trouble on 2 machines browsing web sites for several weeks and EF for the last 4 days (both had internet security 2008 installed) The sites in question are torrent sites and other P2P places I go. I had been specifically adding them to my "allowed" list in trend micro for this time frame. I had the "Parental Controls" turned off since I believe I'm old enough to call myself an adult n'shit... Anyway EF had been basically down for me the last 4 days and I just assumed EF was having trouble. I wasn't having any trouble with "normal" web sites like Microsoft , ESPN and what not.

So today Digger tells me the problem is just me...
Shit!!!
Anyway, I go and uninstall trend micro internet security 2008. After uninstallation EF comes up like a champ. So TMIS 2008 is the culprit , but how??? I found out from their support site that the parental controls MUST be turned on in order for the program to update properly. So I turn on the parental control and trend Micro updates as it used to do. I rebotted as it told me to. I then opened up firefox (since NoScript and Ad Block plus make Firefox an instant winner) and guess what? EF now comes up without problem either. So for some reason Trend Micro has to have parental controls turned on before my browsing of certain web sites such as EF would even work!!! Not to mention this support document says specifically that the software will not update with parental controls turned off

So I spent all day and some of my night debugging a problem that shouldn't have been an issue in the first place...

So if you were unfortunate enough to purchase of a copy of trend micro 2007 or 2008, you might be having issues too browsing web sites.

Never use an internet security program, just a simple AV will work.
and if at home in your home network that you are protecting with NAT and hardware firewall dont even use a software firewall.

Since you are on torrent sites, private ones I hope.. Look for the AV product called NOD32, it will do what it is supposed to do and not f with you.

Trend is a good anti virus anti spam firewall especially in an enterprise environment.

A good free product I like for home use is Avast 4 home edition.

The thread needed to be cleansed of POV's that did not pertain to the use of Trend Micro or other such technologies (whether you think they are needed or not) which are used to secure client PC

It is noted that some people feel that Windows OS's have an undeserved bad wrap....
