politically correct -vs- personal beliefs

Where does everyone draw the line? I've noticed some things progress over the years, and I've seen some regression. It seems that people HAVE to accept gayness these days, as opposed to generations before. On the other hand, everyone calls everyone else "retarded" or a "retard", when 20 years ago, that was VERY impolite to use that term in a derogatory fashion. Even on a TV sitcom I heard a character use that term. Since when did that become accepted?
Why do I bring this up? Recently, my daughter was talking about a tv show she didn't like, "Growing up Gotti" I think. She said something like, "I hate that show. Its so gay". Well, I was about a half second away from going into a tirade about why we shouldn't be using words like "gay" in that manner. But then I didn't. I thought, what the hell happened that everyone has to be so politically correct the whole fucking time? People can't even say "Merry Christmas" to their neighbors or co-workers any more. People can't say alot of things anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the importance of being politically correct. I also don't give a crap if someone else is gay, bi, or whatever. Live and let live, I say.
But I also understand that the word "gay" has replaced the word "lame" among some of the younger generation these days. Hell, I used the word "lame" back in the day without even thinking about how actual medically lame people would feel about it. I was, by definition, being "politically incorrect" in using that term in that fashion.
So I said nothing. And I don't think I will, either. I don't feel like nitpicking every word my daughter speaks for the sake of being "politically correct". Besides, "Growing up Gotti" is a little bit...um..."lame".

Political incorrectness is retarded.

People should be able to say any words they want in any context without any sort of "retribution" from society. If you get offended then thats your problem.

Nothing offends me I believe in the freedom of speech. Say what ever you want. I may not always agree with what is said but who am I to judge. Political correctness is BULLSHIT! Who are they to set the standards they think we need to live by?

Very well said..I agree 100%!

Much of "political correctness" is found in the laws we must obey. These laws are based on findings of equality and reasonableness. Our society is much more diverse today and this demands we behave accordingly.

Laws are required because of the incredible ignorance and intolernace found in so many of our people. We are still not far removed from being primates and we seem to want to act on our instincts first.

Personally I find some of the 'pc" a bit too sensitive ... and I suspect it is there for the power it affords. The laws governing this are being tested and being reworded.

On the other hand ... I am grateful for much of this progress. I find it the mark of intelligence and plain old "good manners" to know how to express oneself and act in full accordance with "pc" so we can all live and function together.

Thanks for the answers, everyone! I was fully expecting to get flamed by some self-righteous fanatic telling me how I'm bringing my daughter up "wrong" for letting her say the word "gay" in a derogatory manner.

And btw, "Growing up Gotti" is f*ckin' GEIGH!!!!!

Political correctness is like a cancer on our society. Here are a couple of links that expose the true nature of "PC". These are easy reads.

What Is Political Correctness?
Political Correctness (PC) is the communal tyranny that erupted in the 1980s. It was a spontaneous declaration that particular ideas, expressions and behaviour, which were then legal, should be forbidden by law, and people who transgressed should be punished. It started with a few voices but grew in popularity until it became unwritten and written law within the community. With those who were publicly declared as being not politically correct becoming the object of persecution by the mob, if not prosecution by the state.

Where does all this stuff that you’ve heard about this morning – the victim feminism, the gay rights movement, the invented statistics, the rewritten history, the lies, the demands, all the rest of it – where does it come from? For the first time in our history, Americans have to be fearful of what they say, of what they write, and of what they think. They have to be afraid of using the wrong word, a word denounced as offensive or insensitive, or racist, sexist, or homophobic.
