Where does everyone draw the line? I've noticed some things progress over the years, and I've seen some regression. It seems that people HAVE to accept gayness these days, as opposed to generations before. On the other hand, everyone calls everyone else "retarded" or a "retard", when 20 years ago, that was VERY impolite to use that term in a derogatory fashion. Even on a TV sitcom I heard a character use that term. Since when did that become accepted?
Why do I bring this up? Recently, my daughter was talking about a tv show she didn't like, "Growing up Gotti" I think. She said something like, "I hate that show. Its so gay". Well, I was about a half second away from going into a tirade about why we shouldn't be using words like "gay" in that manner. But then I didn't. I thought, what the hell happened that everyone has to be so politically correct the whole fucking time? People can't even say "Merry Christmas" to their neighbors or co-workers any more. People can't say alot of things anymore.
Don't get me wrong, I understand the importance of being politically correct. I also don't give a crap if someone else is gay, bi, or whatever. Live and let live, I say.
But I also understand that the word "gay" has replaced the word "lame" among some of the younger generation these days. Hell, I used the word "lame" back in the day without even thinking about how actual medically lame people would feel about it. I was, by definition, being "politically incorrect" in using that term in that fashion.
So I said nothing. And I don't think I will, either. I don't feel like nitpicking every word my daughter speaks for the sake of being "politically correct". Besides, "Growing up Gotti" is a little bit...um..."lame".
