Henderson Police Accused of Beating Elderly Man
(July 24) -- The pictures are disturbing. An 84-year-old man is in the hospital recovering from injuries he says he received at the hands of Henderson police officers. Police say it started with a traffic dispute. It ended with Charles Walker in the hospital.
Employees of the Rainbow Club Casino can't believe this is the same Walker who visits the restaurant three or four times a day.
"He's the sweetest old man. He would give you the shirt off his back if he had to," said Stephanie Fox, a Rainbow Club employee.
Walker suffered injures after a run-in with police Sunday night.
According to the police report, Walker was in his white Pontiac parked in the middle of the intersection at Army and Market Streets in Henderson. Police say they pulled in behind him, and that's when Walker pulled into a nearby parking spot.
According to the police report, Walker would not listen to the officers' directions and resisted arrest.
"There's no excuse. This should've been handled in a different way," said Leo Flangas, an attorney hired by Walker's family. "From what Charlie told me, the officers suspected him of drinking and driving, but Charlie hasn't had a drink in 30 years."
Walker suffered five broken ribs, a hip fracture and multiple contusions.
The Henderson Police Department says it's conducting an internal investigation.
"I believe our community deserves an answer. We don't have all the answers, but we will," said Chief Mike Maybery of the Henderson Police Department.
Meanwhile, friends like Fox are visiting Walker, who's still hospitalized.
"He's in good spirits, but that's how he always is. He's a happy-go-lucky guy," Fox said.
WTF is wrong with cops nowadays ?
